I have a 210-gallon tank. Initially, I placed a Maxspect Gyre on each end. After watching this video, () I liked how he moved the gyres off the glass and mounted them on the center braces. I decided to do the same.
To make it work, I had to modify the setup by adding rectangular pieces of egg crate underneath the gyres. This pushed them deeper into the water so they wouldn’t suck in air during ramp-up when they were too close to the surface. At first, I had them facing toward each other. Then I had another idea: since the Maxspect 350s can run in reverse, I removed the cage and propeller from one side of each gyre and flipped them to the opposite unit. This way, one half of each gyre pushes water toward the glass while the other half pushes toward the center of the tank. This configuration creates a strong circulating flow pattern. By running both units in reverse at the same speed, I’m getting maximum output from the gyres.
I’ve experimented with many different ramp-up profiles, durations at max and min speeds. Although I feel in the configuration mine are more a Max and Max speed. While there is still some movement on the half spinning in reverse its really not moving water significantly I feel. With the offset duration sometimes both middle sections push towards one another and sometimes both units are pushing towards the glass creating variables in flow depending on how they are overlapping on time.
Hopefully I made sense and maybe somebody else will benefit from my tinkering around with the configuration and set up. Until somebody designs a propeller that pushes just as hard both directions. Appreciate the read. Happy Reefing!
