Most of us were originally drawn to Hydros controllers because of their high quality at more affordable prices than other controllers. Over the years though, I think they've sorta lost sight of this. In June of 2024 Coralvue released the Hydros Sole, a continuous-duty dosing pump. This doser has a single head, but currently retails for $346 US. Compare this to other continuous-duty dosers like the Neptune DOS QD and GHL's Doser 2.2 Maxi, which are priced similarly ($450 and $369 US, respectively), but have two heads. Per head, that's around half the price compared to the Sole. Another example, just recently recently Coralvue announced another continuous doser—this time with two heads—named the Hydros Duet. This dosing pump is set to retail at $800 US, around double the cost of the aforementioned similar products on the market. Coralvue tries to justify this price by saying that they use "medical grade" dosing heads from Kamoer normally used in hospitals, but do we really need medical-grade dosing heads in the hobby?
In addition, a personal gripe of mine is that the only Hydros controller with 0-10v output for controlling pumps/lighting (besides the WaveEngine) is the X4, which does not have any salinity monitoring option. Coralvue also doesn't look like they will be releasing any controllers with both of these features anytime soon, so if one wants to both control their pumps and have salinity monitoring, they would have to buy an additional X3-S on top of the X4.

What's your guys' opinions on this?
 
They never had a way. They came in low to get market share. We all knew they were going to skyrocket the price for cheap products and then make support abysmal. Support has always been abysmal in my opinion. Now the price is absurd. All for a controller that doesn't do as much as the Apex can and what it does do it doesn't do very well.

On the dosing head thing all of these dosers use the exact same components. Cheap Chinese made stepper motors and then some plastic bushings as wheels and some tubing to be squeezed. The literal only difference is the steps of the stepper motor. The more steps the more accurate and the more expensive for the motor. Other than that ZERO difference. The funny thing about that is the X10 has the literal worst Kamoer pumps on the market. The heads are poorly designed and crack after a couple thousand rotations. Then they leak like crazy. Pretty goofy when that is a known issue and they are hanging their hat on "medical grade" pumps.

They also use Amazon project boxes for all of the controllers. Now maybe they have gone directly to the manufacturer but they aren't expensive on Amazon so they can't be paying much either. Open the box and most of the hardware is taken from companies they distribute. The software is what you are paying for and it is an absolute mess. Limited by poor decisions by Carlos and David. They put arbitrary limits on things like using X10 pumps for top off etc because it doesn't fit THEIR needs. I believe that has finally been changed so you can do it but it only took several years.

All that said the quality is more robust than the Apex. I have yet to have anything fail in alittle over 2 years of use. Meanwhile in the same timespan I went through 3 Apex head unit crashes. And yes Neptune overcharges for their product too. Open up an Apex head unit and these crashes are caused by Chinese clone sd cards and 50 cent wifi usb adapters.
 
Just a quick suggestion to anyone considering the Hydros vs Neptune debate:

Not quite as polished, and a lot more DIY, but quite a capable controller system that offers almost endless and inexpensive (non proprietary!) expansion as it runs on a simple Raspberry Pi single board computer. Robo Tank certainly takes more DIY effort than Hydros or Neptune, but for those that like poking around with stuff like this, Robo Tank is a decent solution that's worth looking into 🙂
 
I honestly don’t think they ever found their way. Everything thst they do feels random, seat-of-the-pants. Product naming is ridiculous, as is feature distribution. Product footprints have no rhyme or reason, just throw ports wherever they fit on whatever size project box fits them. I could be wrong, but I would bet there is not and never was a well defined product roadmap.

Yes their new dual head doser pricing is ridiculous.
 
I would like to add more to my Hydros collective but all the products released recently are absurdly priced with very bad value per dollar. I am looking forward to seeing what RedSea releases with their upcoming line of controller-oriented products. We need more competition in this area!

You can always resort to building one yourself if you don’t like the price. This is 2026, everything is more expensive. Blunt im not, I just see things how they are.

There's not a lot of options for mainstream controllers outside of the two big players - Neptune and Hydros, and both seem to over inflate their cost, and lock you out of using generic components (proprietary connectors, etc.).

Reef-Pi is a great project, but I don't see many running a Reef-Pi controlled system these days. I am thrilled to see @Ranjib actively posting again. @Ranjib I love what you're doing with the Reef-Pi project, please continue to build Reef-Pi 🙂

I'm not affiliated with Robo Tank, I'm just encouraging reefers to take a look at Robo Tank as an alternative to the mainstream offerings.

There was a time when the creator of Robo Tank was active here on R2R to answer questions, but I haven't seen him in a while. I do wish he'd come back. I can't even tag him any more, which means he may have cut ties with R2R completely; sad, I really liked him and his project.

I couldn’t say. My post was regarding the complaints about how expensive high end dosers were. They cost what they cost. Try making one in your garage is my sarcasm to the situation. Me, you and everyone else live in the same world, everything is expensive and it’s not ever going back to what it was just a few years ago. My catch phrase for most things these days, it is what it is. 😇

The DIY are just that, DIY. They will be Arduino or raspberry based more than likely. Some will come pre-packaged like say the Reef Angel others you will have to build. Probably one of the more longer running DIY kits would be the Reef Angel. Having used one for a spell I have to say that they had some of the best custom libraries I've used to date in any controller. The challenge with these can be that the hobbyist needs to understand platform coding as not all have UI wizards to make it easy. Or the wizard will do A and B but to do the more advanced stuff you need to write code. Because of this there is some risk if you don't know what you are doing.

It goes without saying that A this is a hobby which is discretionary income based. B, a controller isn't necessary or a path to success. Even if one wants some basic monitors this can be done as simple as adding a SICCE powerhead which will give a temp or dry alert or similar product. Seneye for example will also do this.

GHL is an option. Red Sea is starting their kit. Tunze is clearly working on something - you see the hub, portal, and app. You have choices or choose not to.

I'm just blown away at how expensive name brand dosing pumps are. I spent like $300 on my Robo Tank controller system, but then everything I added was generic, and cheap. My ATO is run by my Robo Tank, and the pumps cost me like $15 each ( have two, one for a backup). I have dosing pumps that Robo Tank measures, calibrates, and dispenses perfectly, and the pumps were like $12 each. Robo Tank allows you to use cheap hardware because it doesn't lock you in to an over inflated, proprietary system.

Agreed, the DIY alternatives I offered above are not as polished, but they cost a quarter of the name brand systems.

Also agreed, that this is a hobby that takes some cash 🤪 Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of that any more 🙃

Making aquarium controllers must be way harder than it seems from the outside. Most of us just want to monitor a couple probes, control dosers, and flip some switches. Same things controllers have been doing for 20 years, but now the apps are vibe coded and costs 3x.
 
I'm old school, I don't use any automation except my ATO and 2 part and for those I use a 20 year old LiterMeter III and a pair of their slave pumps.

Fwiw, sisterlimonpot on this forum had previously engineered some peristaltic pumps for his own use, then machined them on his cnc mill. I've seen them disassembled and they are a very complicated device, they aren't just rollers and some tubing driven by a motor, they have gear reduction and a sinusoidal drive (I think that is the term) and use a high end stepper motor, all with tolerances of half a thou. I may see him tomorrow at our club meeting I'll ask him about them. I'll for sure have him contribute to this thread.

There is too much overlap in their product line. I too am in the Hydros ecosystem and I agree they are over priced. The new two head dosing pump they came out with has two $90 pumps on it. That's $180 worth of pumps but the unit is priced at $800.

Currently working on using the 0-10v out on the WE to run four Kamoer dosing pumps off Amazon for $15 each. The problem with this approach is the limit of 0-10v out connectors and only 4 channels each connector, I have less than $100 in a relay board and four dosing pumps or I could buy the Blenny for $400.

We need an affordable system that has the redundancy of Hydros, the scripting/customization of Apex, and a REST API to get the cool 3rd party UI like Avid Aqua.
 
I was very lucky and got an x10/xp8 combo from a friend that was less than 6 months old for a steal of a price, maybe 1/4the normal cost. I say this to say if the deal hadn’t been so good I think I would have beer bought a controller.

Having something that monitors power on my return and alerts me definitely gives me piece of mind but wouldn’t be worth the price tag they are asking. The probes for ph/salinity/temp are also nice but not really must haves.

I am still new to the echo system, however, I work in tech and like to think I’m pretty technologically capable. Their UI eventually makes sense but isn’t great right off the bat to understand. Things like combiners are hard to find good documentation on, or at least up to date documentation on.

I’ve never used an apex before but I do think that hydros logs are a very nice thing(not sure if apex has this) and wa something I didn’t expect to look at so often but find myself looking at.

At full price though, ultimately, I would never suggest it to anyone

BTW the Neptune Apex has access via API - I use Grafana.

Everything Sucks, to somebody. Whatever someone thinks is the greatest product ever, it fails. Every car manufacturer has a service department.

I've been doing Aquarium controllers for a long long time. I started DIY in 1987 by taking a sprinkler timer, adding relays and having a 100g Saltwater tank in my frat house with 3 stages of lighting that ramped up and ramped down everyday. In 1989 I started making money by getting a low voltage contractors license and buying Ademco alarm system, modifying the sensor inputs to monitor float swithes, temp, leak, and flow - and have a system that dialed a pager when something went awry.

I didn't get the Neptune Aquacontroller 1, but I did get the 2nd generation of the Aquacontroller --- Headache.

I jumped on board with the first gen Apex. I loved the ability to just keep adding prebuilt modules to it. I was so into tweaking it that I was the Neptune Key speaker at MACNA Denver.

When during my speach of how I had custom built components I found that a BOB could be substituted with a 9 pin round computer cable for under $10.... The company frowned up on me. Then I lost my faith with the company. First, they advertised expansion to 256 modules. But being one of the first end users to get past 18 modules. Each time a module was added after 18, they had to modify a firmware for me. Everytime they did an update, they had to send me a special firmware.

And then after a major update, there was a flaw in the firmware that bricked the system at 12:01a the day after the update.... And the company shut down all public threads warning people.

I setup a GHL system, but the support was too slow, and too much was needed.

I stuck with Apex as a controller, and the number of times the system hiccuped, glitched, or froze and cost me thousands of dollars each time was beyond the number of fingers on my hands. The products they released that seemed to only have been protoyped and then sent to market for Alpha testing.

But the product reliability was the real issue, with 30 modules, and every new product produced becoming less and less reliable.

When I first talked to Hydros about taking control of my system, to their benefit they said at the time that their system wasn't able to handle the needs/size of my system.

Then after another major Apex failure, and me being upset, Joe of Unique Corals / Triton US / Marco Rocks said - Dude, it's your fault. It keeps crashing, and you keep resetting it.

He was right, I couldn't keep ******** about a product, when I was the idiot that kept using it. I decided to build my own controller. I started with Siemens PLC used parts off ebay. Then realized I wanted newer modules for webaccess. I invested a few thousand in building a Siemens test board, with multiple probes for temp, ph, ORP, DO, Salinity. And relay control outputs and push button inputs. But the web programming was intense.

And then my brain started to fail, literally, the onset of dementia. The Siemens went into a box. Someone offerred to help me with the PLC project but instead of Siemens wanted to use Clickplus PLC with the Ziplink addons.

He offered to do all the programming. I bought 2 complete systems, one for each of us to test and develop with. I got the temp probe working, he got the first part of the web access for temp working. And then his wife called that it was time to go have their baby. He said he would call me in a week.


He never called. A drunk driver hit the car with him and his wife on the way to the hospital. I couldn't learn the programming for the Clickplus, and it all went into a box in the fish shed.


Then Hydros said they were comfortable taking on a system the size of my system. Four Years ago I started the transition. Has it been perfect, Nah. Has there been calls to support, more than a few. Have modules failed, yep one or two.

But, In 4 years, I can't say that any issue I have ever had with Hydros has caused any harm to any of my livestock!!!! And that's the most important thing for me.

I don't understand the logic that every module is an independent controller. Yet when a module fails, or a cable gets disconnected - the collective goes offline. I have 18 modules online. The 'collective' (dumb name IMO) for my 1500g reef system is spread across 5 locations. Figuring out where a module has gone offline (which mean I knocked a cable out usually) - is a pain in my tush. But the livestock is safe.

I now have a Hydros on my Freshwater tank, and my wife's clown breeding rack.

1/2 my system volume and 3/4 of my Hydros system is outside. And unless you shoot water right into the outlets on an XP8 - the system outside in the elements has not been an issue.


The prices of anything for an aquarium is always too much, but let's not forget it is a luxury item a reef is not a necessity -- Even if you think you are a reef addict. But true addicts know - the good stuff ain't cheap - regardless of addiction.

Whether its drugs, cars, guns, jewelry, tech, audio or reef - Those are all luxury items - you don't need them to survive - you want them.

I can afford any of these. But what I can't afford is a piece of equipment that's supposed to protect my luxury fish and yet it's potential failure (or hiccup) puts all that livestock at risk.

Whether Apex, Hydros, Tesla, Apple, McClaren or Rolls - They all have tech support and service departments.

True DIY is a huge comittment of time and money - However from my brief experience the accuracy and stabilty is amazingly better - but you're starting off with commercial grade products.

The question I have for all you complaining about the price of this module or that module.... Do you have a generator at your house that automatically kicks in when the power goes out?

A $300, $400, $800 dosing head. A crappy, decent, amazing controller - ain't gonna do anything when the power goes out. Most of you are complaining about a sub $1000 item, protected 1000s of dollars in livestock, and yet you don't spend a few thousand to make sure the lights never go out....
