Hey everyone! Checking in from Spokane. Looking to start setting up a tank here in a few months and excited to dive back in. I had a FOWLR many many moons ago (like back when you had to check out books from the library for research….) as well as a Predator only tank and ran these through my teens and early 20s on a shoestring budget. The FOWLR tank took a huge hit on super hot day and never really recovered, chillers were insane priced back then. The Predator tank saw all of its inhabitants live their full natural lives and after that I decided to be done with the weekly water changes and constant testing.

Now I have a dang near perfect set up in my basement for a tank and my wife has given me the go ahead. Have a mechanical room with a nice big industrial sink and counter, and a nice rec room with a 60s vinyl floor and a drain lol. I am really wanting to try my hand at corals this time. I am planning a tank only budget of around $5000 and wondering what the communities opinions are on something like this?

Also considering the 75 gal option. I have never run a sump before so feeling a bit intimidated. Also what are some other things I should consider getting for the tank/sump? I know I will needs lights obviously, but what are other things I will need such as a protein skimmer.

Hello and welcome!

I have had the IM EXT 75 gallon, and upgraded to the IM EXT 170.
They are well made tanks and a very good option for a new setup.

My personal opinion is if you have the room, I would get the IM 100. Having a larger tank is always a plus, but it also comes with a larger more functional sump that will give you a few more advantages.

The 75 gallon sump only has 3 sections, a drain section, skimmer OR refugium section and a return pump section. You will have to choose between a skimmer and a refugium, and there is no extra room in that cabinet to add an external refugium. The IM 100 has a sump that has 4 sections, so you have space for both a skimmer section AND a refugium making the sump much more versatile. You will treasure that extra space!

Hope this helps, and again welcome!

Welcome to the community! Can't go wrong with IM. A lot of members have their tanks and if ever an issue arises their customer support is top notch 😁
