If the temperature is actually 96.6, might have been a heater malfunction.

What is the ambient temperature of your house/area?

I would do gradual top off with cooler water (not freezing cold, just around 70-75 degrees) up until your usual top of line, and float some frozen ice packs in the water to cool down the tank.

Are your clowns the only living things in there? I would think 96.6 degrees would be catastrophic.

I would also run an airline tubing as with high temperature you risk oxygen deprivation due to less Dissolved oxygen capacity.

Set heater slightly higher say 82-84 degrees. This will allow the INKBIRD to be boss and even if INKBIRD failed in the on position, heater still cuts out early

Lower slowly a bit and continue till target reached.

It’s one clown and the house is kept at 70 degrees less at night

I'd turn the heater off and replace it, and then aim a fan at the water's surface to cool down gradually. dropping the temp 20 degrees all at once will be just as shocking, so best to bring down the temp slowly.

Which inkbird do you have?

I have the ITC 308 and can walk you thru what I know

Put a fan on the water and point a circulation pump up to the surface to increase oxygen exchange and improve the cooling effect

I don’t have one I want to get one tho
