I recieved a chalice about a week ago, that had receeded a bit during shipment. I noticed last night that it was getting some red slime algae (bacteria) on the spots that it receeded (on the skeleton). Of course this morning it was even more dramatic.

Any suggestions ? I am considering cutting my losses (literally) and fragging the chalice but as stressed as it is, I am concerned I will kill it.

I'd say cut it. I've had two chalices that were receding, one I was affraid to cut and it died the other I did cut and I still have it.

Thank you. Well it looks like I am going to have my first experience in fragging a chalice. Time to put the dremel with diamond cutter to the test.

it is better to frag it before it is too late. some time an infection can bleach the whole colony. I have done this many of times and saved about 75% of them but the piece that it was cut from bleached. good luck

Don't just cut away with a drememl. Start on the back side, don't cut the flesh with dremel take the razor blade to that. Don't let anything get too hot or you could kill it.

Good Luck !!

I was planning on cutting the skeleton as much as I can without touching the flesh and taking a fresh razor blade to cut what is left (flesh and little skeleton).

Gotta catch a few youtube videos on fragging and get a couple of beers in me for this process, already nervous.

another option is to use a turkey baster to blast the algae off. once you have cleared that crap off the coral take super glue gel and apply a dressing to the "wound" the glue helps seal off the bleached part of the coral and the glue can keep the algae from regrowing back on the wound. I think this is usually less stressful than fragging the chalice and stressing it further...

that's the other trouble with small frags:crossedlips: sometimes the frags are too small to recover and you're stuck...

I tried to get the bacteria off, but it is pretty stubborn. I even hit it with the Red Slime Remover and that killed the small spots, but there is a big spot that just keeps strong. I will try blasting it again, I would be extremely thankful if that worked out.
