Hello,

My new Naoko Wrasse has started behaving like this so I've played him in QT tank with crushed peas as I suspected Swim Bladder. Could it be something else?

It may well be the "Unknown Neurological Wrasse Disease". I started a post that describes it here:

I can see the video. The wrasse is swimming weakly and seems to tend toward drifting belly upward (upside down). I definitely see why you're thinking swim bladder issues.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for this, I believe you are most likely correct with this so thanks for sharing that... he's still alive at this moment and seems to want to stay bent in a c shape where his tail is bent at all times. Would this factor in to the neurological issue ? As he doesn't seem to have any injuries or marks.

Thanks #fishmedic

Yes - the bent spine is a symptom of this. However, the classic symptom is that the fish still tries to eat. If you see that, then 100% it is the UNWD. If the fish isn't trying to eat, it could still be this issue, but could also be what we call "moribund" or actively dying from some other issue.

Other than the peas, would you recommend anything else to try ?

The recommendation of "feeding peas" has a long and convoluted history. It began as a treatment for issues with floating fancy goldfish. An aquarist at the Shedd Aquarium passed that remedy on to me, and it does work! However, the issue with fancy goldfish is because they have weirdly shaped intestines that trap gas, making them float. Feeding peas works as a laxative, expelling the gas and allowing the fish to swim normally.

At some point, this idea got "transferred" to other fish. It has NO benefit for swim bladder issues at all, yet the idea has been spread all over the Internet......

I'm afraid he does yes attempt to try and eat however he can't get to the food in time as he can't stay buoyant.

Do I just leave him to deteriorate further or is it better to uthanise ?

Thanks #fishmedic

If it is getting some food, you could wait a few more days, but I usually elect to euthanize these fish, as I've never had one recover....sorry!
