Hey everyone! 👋
Spanish guy living in Sydney here 🇪🇸🇦🇺

I’m about to start my new reefing adventure and plan to begin cycling my tank this weekend — super excited about it! Hopefully I don’t mess things up too badly along the way 😅

I’m planning to take things slowly once the cycle is done. Most of my equipment is second-hand, and the live rock I got also came used — one piece even seems to have some zoas on it (at least I think they’re zoas).

Can anyone help me confirm what they are?

Also, quick question — since the rocks came from an established tank, should I place them straight into the water without cycling? Would that give me an instant cycle, and will the zoas survive through it?

I'll make sure to keep you all posted on how everything goes!

Tank is a reefsys 180

welcome aboard aussie reefer
I hope someone here will help you
I can but it will take me a hour to type up
using a rock from a previous tank can have its benefit and also create an unnecessary disaster
same with equipment if not cleaned properly

here are some discussions that might help you

you should clean used equipment for a fish tank, especially if it was previously used for another aquarium, and thorough cleaning is crucial to prevent the spread of diseases. Use a combination of scrubbing with a solution of white vinegar and water, or a diluted bleach solution if disinfecting is needed, followed by a thorough rinsing. Always ensure all cleaning agents are completely rinsed off before the equipment is returned to service. (credit google AI)

how to 👇
and search more topics for cleaning equipment with citric acid / hydroxy peroxide / distilled white vinegar and much more (since i don't see any coralline algae on your tank I dot thing you need citric acid) vinegar should do it but if you do check ratios and rinsing

im sure you will get some good help here

Thank you for the recommendations, I already did a leak test with all the machinery and tap water for few hours it was working great, I cleaned everything with RODI and white vinegar after and rinse with RODI, the machinery I just allowed it to run in RODI for 30m and then cleaned a bit more with alcohol.

Btw, I've just detected some aiptasia, so I'm thinking to add 2 or 3 peppermints after 2 weeks

I think you've posted on here twice.

Peppermints would take care of these, but if they are larger, you might be better off grabbing an Australian Stripey - just be prepared to move it on though as they do eat soft corals.

The rocks also have Vermetid snails on them, so worth spending the time getting rid of them if you can before you lock everything into the tank.

Thank you so much!!

I checked the Australian Stripey, but I think my tank is too small for them, it's just 144l on the display +36l sump. That's why I thought on these shrimps, they can at least eat the small ones, and for the biggest I can use some lemon juice on them.

How did you recognize the vermetid snails? I cant see them in the picture.

I can remove them during the aquascape readiness, Is there any specific tool I need to remove them?
