New tank owner here. A 40 breeder with a 20 long sump. Always been interested in saltwater tanks simply for the cool diversity one can have. I know now there's also a lot in freshwater but the creatures just aren't the same lol. My tank has only been up and running for a couple months now.

Welcome aboard. 40g breeder is a nice size. I have one running with a hob filter.
The variety of life forms is one of the things that drew me in. I'm now up to 5 tanks running with my most recent being a little 8g trying non photosynthetic filter feeders for the first time.

Hello and welcome to r2r! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!!
I ver much plan on this lol. Also, as an update to my original intro, stocked with very little atm. Not sure what to get next but am interested in the dark sump idea with a sponge of types in the near future.

1_sargassum frogfish
2_astria snails
2_nassarius snails
2_blue leg hermits
1_tiger conch

2_feather duster worms
1_golf ball sized chunk of GSP (I'd like to do a sidewall covered to make it a peninsula tank)

Sounds like a good start. I mean we almost always have to start with a pair of clownfish right? Gsp is a great introduction to corals. There’s a ton of great beginner stuff. My best advice would be to see how those things go and just practice on testing. Get some good reliable test equipment and get a good grip on things. There’s so much to learn! I’ve been in the hobby 11 years and I’m still learning new things!

I have the salt kit from API. Down the road will be an upgrade to the Hanna's. Which other levels should I be monitoring along with the standard in the saltwater kits?

I plan to keep the predator/reef idea. I'd like to keep the frogfish but also some mushrooms, zoas, zenias, a clam maybe. I guess more of lps and soft corals.

Zoas and Xenia are good but I’d go with fireworks clove polyps. Xenia is invasive from my understanding. For what your looking to do nitrate and phos you want to keep around 10n .1 phos. Will be hard to see them until u get Hanna checkers. Cal. Mag and alk are also very important. Your mag probably won’t change much as long as you do weekly or monthly water changes. Hanna checkers that u want to get will be for alk. Ulr phos, and high range nitrate. For calcium and magnesium use salifert. Hanna has those as well but from my experience are not accurate.

Its all wrote down in the note pad. It shall be looked into next. This would eliminate or decrease a need for macros as to leave the nutrients for future corals?
