HOLY GRAIL ANEMONE

Picked up this holy grail nem for 30$
Lfs worker didn’t realize what it was and had it in the wrong pricing bracket.
I searched across the internet and see these guys selling for $300+ online

Very pretty. Never heard of a holy grail nem. Looks like a sunburst variety. Brilliant colors olin that light. Just keep swimming.

When I did the image search on google there was a hit on corals.com calling it “bts holy grail anemone”

I mean, nice looking 'nem for sure, and I guess I'm glad you got a deal, but taking advantage of an LFS worker that didn't know what they were doing seems kind of sketchy to me, just sayin'. It's not like you got one over on Walmart or some huge company, and that employee may get fired over this when the owner figures out what happened. Just sayin'

Yeah one thing if they got it in for that price and it just happened to not be what they paid for it/they didn't know, another if it's just a confused employee that got store prices mixed up. Former scenario happens a lot though and it's mainly on the wholesalers, I've seen significantly more expensive fish/inverts come in as "bycatch" with shipments of cheaper ones, or just be rarer/more desirable species altogether mislabeled due to out of date taxonomy (Meiacanthus herlihyi coming in as atrodorsalis, Cryptocentrus melanopus coming in as leptocephalus, Calcinus tibicens coming in with shipments of blue leg hermits, etc). Another situation could be someone brought it in and either the store doesn't know how much it's supposed to be or they're just pricing it that low to turn it loose. Highly doubt it's the latter though.

I just feel bad for what's likely a small business in a hobby I love, and a poor kid that may lose their job over this.

I'm not trying to escalate this into the crime of the century, or even flame the OP's post, but I know someone would have/should have said it, even if I didn't.

That's kind of how I was feeling about this thread, again, not looking to be a jerk or bash. But to say that you got this amazing anemone for 10% of what it should cost, doesn't seem to be a great way to inspire other anemone owners (who probably paid full price!) to rush in here.

Why should some kid or whoever not be fired, or not get in trouble, for not paying attention and selling a high dollar item for basically nothing.

lol the mental gymnastics people will perform to justify taking advantage of others.

It’s not hard. Would you want someone to come in and take advantage of your kid or your mom’s knowledge gap to make a few bucks? Would you be upset if they then came online to brag about ripping them off? This dude knew what was happening as it was happening and decided to say nothing rather than be a decent person.

It’s amazing how little people can empathize when it comes to making a dollar.

He goes to the store and sees something nice in the cheap bin. Says I’d like to buy that. They ring it up. He pays and walks out. It’s not complicated or manipulative and he didn’t take advantage of anyone.

The reason I asked if they had this same anemone in a more expensive location is to try and identify if there actually was a mistake made on the stores behalf

My lfs for example - couldn’t tell you the difference between a exosphere and a strat. They don’t know most corals by “trade name”. They order from a supplier and buy a box for xxxx dollars and it’s letter graded inventory. A grade zoanthid. b grade torch.

It’s possible there simply was a 30$ nem bin and a 60$ nem bin, but the store got a high end shipment of wild Nems and some had super nice coloration. They don’t know they have what others call a “bta sunrise” or whatever. To them and their supplier it’s simple “orange anemone” or “single color” or “rainbow anemone”.

I find most LFS do not have the knowledge we have as hobbiests. Top known places like wwc and tsa - they know what they have and what they get. Something like “Carlton County Fish” probably have no idea and employees are kids that need a part time job but don’t even keep tanks of their own. How can they be held accountable. If they make a mistake the it’s the store owners fault for not training and explaining the items. Or like I said earlier, a mistake might not have been made at all

Tsa gets a wild anemone with beautiful coloration - they are naming it or finding what it looks like and asking full value

A local pet store might just say we got 50 corals in this box that cost 1500$ - as long as we sell each one for more than 30 we profit and are ahead

I mean, this same analogy can be applied to people who thrift or go to yard sales looking for collectibles. When I was thrifting for retro video games, I found a few that were expensive and paid just a couple of bucks for them. Was I going to the cash register and saying, "Hey, this game I'm about to buy for $5 is actually worth $200?" No.

Now whenever I went to a yard sale or a flea market and someone asked me the value of something or to name my price. Sure, I would be more honest with them. I still would try to get a deal, but I wasn't going to rip them off completely.

Anyways, back to the anemone in question. I agree with you that we don't have the full story or context in question. Was it just a genuine mistake? Was it people just throwing anemones into a basket not really knowing what they had? Who knows.
