hot glue gun

I have no direct knowledge or experience with this. I have not used anything other than super glue and silicone in my tanks.

For my own evaluation I consider anything marked "food safe" to also be reef safe. So there are probably hot glue products that would be fine.

That being said, being that I have used "aquarium safe" silicone before and know it to be safe, I would use that instead of hot glue.

Your standard hobby grade hot glue, made predominately of ethylene vinyl acetate, would NOT hold up long term being submerged. As stated, there are better choices and silicone would be my first suggestion as well. I'd look at the "acrylic" version they sell in HD in their acrylic sheet goods section of the store. You don't find this caulk in the paint department with the rest of the caulks. A little pricey, but sticks very well to plastics.....just let it cure for as long as you can....four to five days or more. Looks like this:
