I have some SPS frags turning pale in a relatively new (4 mo old) 40 gal tank. The alkalinity is around 9.5-10 Khd and I would like to lower it (about 0.5/day), thinking that is too high, especially when I'm struggling to get the phosphates above zero. (I know the combination of low or zero phosphates with high alkalinity is not good for SPS). I stopped daily AWC (with I.O. salt which I know is high in alk), stopped Triton 4-part dosing, and removed kalk from ATO water. I also slowed the DC pump on my skimmer so nothing is reaching the collection cup. I'm not sure if aeration is adding or removing CO2. I live in NJ with windows closed so I'm guessing it is adding CO2? And, I'm feeding heavily (3x/day; frozen, flakes and pellets).
Getting nitrates up is a bit of a struggle also, but I have them around 4; phosphates at zero are a bigger problem.
I have Brightwell BioFuel (organic carbons) but am reluctant to use it because it will aggravate the low NO3 and PO4 battle.
I know muriatic acid will lower the alk but I don't have any and want to do something quickly before I lose any frags. (One died overnight). Any suggestions are welcome!
Also, any recommendations for a salt with low alk would be appreciated.
Yesterday, I posted a thread about my SPS frags turning pale, with photos, (but didn't get any responses). If interested, you can view it here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/p...ing-if-anyone-owns-these-specific-sps.712609/
Thanks for helping!
