luckily I haven’t had a tank crash yet but I wondering about those who have, so how did your tank crash?

Due to lack of knowledge and experience on my part, I attempted 5 lps/leather corals in a nano reef which all dissolved and spiked my nitrates from 7ppm to 80ppm, which killed 2 fish, 6 snails, 3 hermits, and caused a ton of bryopsis, and green coralline algae.

Did you ever resolve that or just take the tank down?

It was driving to fast in terrible weather conditions...

Very large mertens anemone got into a gyre, not even very much, caused barely a scratch on the nem, but the stinging cells it sent through out the tank took out all of my fish, lost over 30 fish to that thing. It got sold quickly after, i am currently trying to restock the tank.

Omg Im sorry that happened that is insane

I'm resolving it now actually! Bryopsis is all gone now thanks to reef flux, and the coralline algae is growing much slower now than before since my macroalgae is doing a good job at combatting against the nuisance algaes. Once I get back from vacation this summer I'm going to begin restocking, and adding coral again since I know a lot more now than I did many months ago. I would still consider this a tank crash though since it took rigorous efforts to get my tank back in shape (sort of).

Mine lost powder in the middle of the night a few years back in the dead of summer. Our AC wasnt working and the outlet my tank was using took a crap (we have outlet issues the landlord wont fix). No oxygen in the tank and the temp read around 90 degrees. All my fish were gone. I cried so hard and almost tore down my whole set up. My BF wouldnt let me give up though and I have a 300 gallon now.

Second crash was right when I was almost done cycling my 300 a cucumber managed to get in my sump and shredded itself in my return pump and nuked everything. Only my eels survived. NO MORE DEATH NOODLES IN MY TANK EVER.

Last one was a blue hippo! He was an adult and beautiful but he brought something that looked like black ich in the tank. Only my 4 eels made it. NO MORE EVIL HIPPOS.

I almost had one recently when my heater exploded in my sump! Lost two fish but I caught it and was able to get the tank fixed.

Been one heck of a challenge from start to finish. But my tank is perfect now 🙂

Unfortunately loss is a part of this hobby. My wife and I have a saying, once we buy something its already dead. We have been fortunate to have things live very long happy lives in our tanks. The key to loss is learnign from it and trying to make sure it doesnt happen again. I knew better with the nem. i had it for 3 years, it was over 36 inches across, i never had an issue, and then one day it decided to walk to the gyre. the first time it killed just a few fish. the 2nd time a few weeks later it killed them all. I should have learned the first time and done something about the gyres. i still dont know why it started to move, i think because of its size.

An almost crash for me. Velvet break out in three tanks. Killed half my fish. Managed to QT and save the other half. Then while tending to 4 QT tanks to get the fish in good health. I lost track of parameters in my display tanks. Nitrates bottomed out almost killing my zoas, and nems. The hammer and Duncan’s seemed to have been just fine. My biggest nem a 8-9” RBTA split. And my ColoradoSB is still in bad shape. I’m really hoping she pulls through! I could care less about money, it’s how beautiful she was while the tank was with fish. So now I’m having to take care of three DT’s and 4 QT tanks. Not fun at all! And I will never not QT new marine life I’m planning on putting in my DT’s! It’s only a matter of time before not QTing catches up to you.

That's a lot of crashes... I don't think the reef gods like you very much... :downcast-face-with-sweat:

ATO on vacation.

I was happily finding path with my other pathfinders... when I got the call.

"There is some water coming from your place"

I rushed but it was to late. 70 liters osmose water had been pumped into the tank and the tank overflowed... I couldn't save anything. That was it for the next 10 years. I was ... out.

I always told myself I would start again if I where retired. But you know how that works out...

I got this as a memory.

My tank went from healthy and clear to cloudy and everything dying within hours. Not even the "unkillable" pulsing Xenia survived. Even the bristle worms were no match for whatever happened in the saltwater tank to make it meltdown that quickly. My freshwater tank is fine though
