I hear that chaeto refugium helps grow pods. But how does the cheato contribute to helping the copepods reproduce and thrive? Is it simply a predator-free habitat? Or does the surface of the chaeto grow some bacteria or algae that the copepods consume? Or the the oxygen produced by the chaeto during lighting hours providing the copepod with extra oxygen to thrive? Is the chaeto also creating a habitat for copepod food (algaeo, bacteria?) that synthetic material like sponges can't? If it's strictly living space, I'd imagine some kind of filter sponge could mimic a similar habitat chaeto.

Just curious. I'm still on my mission to maximize copepod population in my tank, and want to know more about the biology of it.

It is a predator free habitat with lots of concealed surface area that pods can freely traverse and breed in. I don’t think it has anything to do with bacteria, oxygen, etc. you can also support pod breeding by having small piles of rubble rock in your display that has space within it for pods but too small to be accessed by pod predators like wrasses and mandarins.

Hi there!

The surface of Chaetomorpha, or Chaeto, does develop a biofilm of bacteria and algae that create an additional food source for copepods. These microorganisms, along with detritus caught in the dense mats, provide a safe refuge and breeding ground for copepods. Plus, Chaeto’s rapid growth helps in nutrient export, making it a win-win for your tank’s ecosystem.

In addition to Chaeto, dosing with live phytoplankton, helps maintain a healthy pod population by providing a steady food supply. Phytoplankton are a key food source for copepods, ensuring they have the nutrients they need to thrive. Furthermore, OceanMagik phytoplankton outcompetes nuisance algae for vital nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, effectively killing off unwanted algae and keeping your tank cleaner.

Yes, you're right! During lighting hours, Chaeto engages in photosynthesis, producing oxygen as a byproduct. This oxygen gets dissolved into the water, upping the oxygen levels in your tank. Higher oxygen levels can indeed make the environment more conducive for copepods, aiding their respiration and overall health.

This process not only benefits the copepods but also helps maintain a more balanced and healthier ecosystem within your tank.
