How do people get badges? I would like to build my way up to some

Mostly either from competitions, giveaways, becoming supprting or partner members

Participation and persistence mostly. Some can be bought occationally.

Honestly I try to keep them under a certain amount and had some removed, not trying to be flashy. But there is a way to turn them off too.

Honestly, if you are active enough on the forum and keep an eye out for contests we do. You can get badges pretty quickly

JMO and not meant to be negative to those of you who love your badges but I think most are just fluff and have a tendency to draw attention from people new and can instil false confidence. They see bunch of badges and think that person must be knowledgeable and often that is not the case.

Start a tank thread and or showcase tank are two of the easiest and most useful badges for me. I like being able to look at peoples personal tanks when they offer advice. I also find it useful when someone is asking about adding fish. I tend to not offer much advise when someone is asking about adding tangs or angels and has a nano tank but fails to mention that fact when asking.
