Is 1.012 easier on the fish than 1.009?
Oh yes! 1.012 is well tolerated by virtually all bony fishes, just not sharks and rays.
The trouble is that while 1.012 works well for flukes, it won't effectively treat for Cryptocaryon (saltwater ich), so you need to treat that at 1.009. More bony fishes will have issues with that, especially if the level accidentally drops to 1.008. Still, almost all bony fishes will survive a 1.009 treatment except some eels that might go off feed during that time. If the eels are in poor condition going in, they may not survive hypo for the full 30 days.
