Hyposalinity

The issue with anthias is that they sometimes arrive with Uronema. Hyposalinity allows Uronema to really thrive, so that can be an issue.

Uronema thrives in hyposalinity and Amyloodinium (velvet) can reproduce down to 4ppt. In fact, I have a list of fish affected by velvet and it includes bluegills (because they can live in 4 ppt).

Another curator I know who has researched this in his fish says less than around 21 to 23 days. I call it 30 days because that coincides with the typical ich hypo treatment. Also, 30 days removes any ambiguity regarding the time spent entering and coming out of hypo.

In a fish only tank does a specific gravity of 1.018 have any effect on flukes. I have read that some lfs keep the specific gravity low to suppress disease.

IT will suppress some species of flukes, but not Neobenedenia, and that’s the worst one. 1.012 is needed to eliminate that species.

Oh yes! 1.012 is well tolerated by virtually all bony fishes, just not sharks and rays.

The trouble is that while 1.012 works well for flukes, it won't effectively treat for Cryptocaryon (saltwater ich), so you need to treat that at 1.009. More bony fishes will have issues with that, especially if the level accidentally drops to 1.008. Still, almost all bony fishes will survive a 1.009 treatment except some eels that might go off feed during that time. If the eels are in poor condition going in, they may not survive hypo for the full 30 days.

I’m not optimistic that the Prazi has worked due to bacteria degradation so I’m in the process of going hypo. The fish breathing rate is completely normal and all are eating like crazy. The tank is at 1.018 now. Only thing that concerns me is I don’t have a lab grade hydrometer. I think it’s pretty accurate using my salinity monitor. If I go with 1.012 at least I have some wiggle room downward to 1.009. The fish don’t have any Ich symptoms. Flukes are my main concern.

I have one I got about 25 years ago. The next best way to go is to use multiple measuring devices, and then try to see if there is any consensus.

That’s why I used the salinity monitor, I have 2 for comparison. If I put it at 1.012 and the hydrometer is off minus 2 then I’m safe. If I put it at 1.009 and it’s off minus 2 then that’s a problem.
