I noticed the three fish has a spotted coating on them last evening that from morning pictures seemed not existent. Sent LFS a message and so we monitored. Woke up this morning found one dead, on later died and one clinging to life. We have this blue tang (dead), Japanese Swallowtail (dead) and a cow infected with much coating. LFS believes it to be ich as their tanks are not affected. New tank with in three months all fish from same lfs.
We have two clowns, two pjs, gobby pistol pair. Various crabs and snails. Parameters all stable.
Trying to learn from this experience. We were given a solution to help put a coating on them and a organic type medicine. Both dropped into tank. In Canada apparently medicine etc are banned or not available.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

The basic way to tell velvet (Amyloodinium) from ich (Cryptocaryon) is that velvet causes the fish to breath VERY fast and sometimes, spots are not even visible. Ich on the other hand, doesn't cause rapid breathing until the very end, and the spots are large and distinct (but in advanced cases, they run together and look like mucus).

I can see larger spot on the cowfish, but I can't see how fast it is breathing.

You are at a huge disadvantage in Canada because you can not easily get effective medications for either disease.

The cow had an extremely hard night. He lost his control of his fins and would float aimlessly. I moved him into the “death corner” low movement and he passed shortly after. Three fish within 24 hours. Watching the remaining 5. LFS feels it was ICH or his tanks would be wiped as well. Hoping.
