I had a series of RTN and STN events with some of my acros including a total loss of a seven year old colony.

This happened after I did a 55 gallon water change on a 300 gallon system following a Chemiclean treatment.

Now I am currently battling prorocentrum and coolia dinoflagellates.

Despite the dinos, my acros have stabilized and are doing well again. The water change that seemed to have sparked the RTN was about a month ago.

I decided to get an ICP test done.

Here are the results.

Looking for advice on whether to dose what is recommended or just do water changes. I typically did 1% per day on an AWC. I use regular IO salt.

I stopped doing any water changes because it is recommended in the case of dinos however, I’m still concerned with my acros getting all the elements they need.

If it were my tank, I would not supplement. I would put AWC back on 1% per day using IO salt just as you were doing. I would make sure I have the recommended amount of GAC changed weekly until dinos are gone. If dinos get a lot worse and are causing problems with your cuc or corals, then I would consider other Dino attack options that can be found on numerous Dino threads. Good luck.

Are you using ozone? Dosing any carbon or vibrant? Have you checked for any rusting magnets, swelling magnets, or stray voltage?

A 1% water change will do practically nothing for iodine levels from my understanding.

I have ran GAC through this dino episode and actually noticed improvement when I took it off line. Not improvement meaning lesser dinos but acros looking better. So I stopped running it. This was the case without dinos as well. My acros always seem to appear better without GAC running.

Forgot to mention, I installed a 90 watt and 25 watt UV sterilizer on my 300 gallon system. I’m also dosing 60 ml of Phyto Feast per day.
My glass is no longer accumulating the brown dinos (microscope id) and instead has been replaced with green film algae that is building up very quickly. Within an hour of cleaning the glass, I can see a green tinge forming back.

The sand dwelling coolia is the remaining issue but doesn’t seem to be effecting any animals.

Iodine is important, I do an icp every 3 or 4 months and dose 5 ml of this weekly

Brightwell's Lugol's Solution is a good one. I would definitely use one made for reef tanks.
If my memory is correct, I believe there is a caveat to using Lugol’s. I think it adds something unnatural in addition to the natural iodine. Maybe @Randy Holmes-Farley can explain it if he sees this.

I'm not convinced that dosing iodine in any form is useful, and I do not dose any, despite dosing iodide for many years. When I stopped, I saw no changes, and many people have had similar experiences.

Lugol's has a specific chemical concentration, so presumably Brightwell makes it per the standard, from which we could calculate a dose, but they actually give dose directions on their web site. I also agree that potassium or sodium iodide is a bit better way to go if you choose to dose iodine. That said, many people use it.

Brightwell says " Each ml of Brightwell Aquatics Lugol’s will increase the concentration of iodine (“”) in 1 US-gallon (3.785 L) of water by 34 ppm, or approximately 1.7 ppm per drop"

http://brightwellaquatics.com/products/lugolst.php

So if you want to boost iodine by 0.06 ppm in 70 gallons, you'd add about (0.06/1.7) *70 = 2.5 drops.

I'd add that about once a week.

Here's the info you are looking for if you go the Lugol's route OP.

One last mention about iodine. Back in the day, myself and other local reefers would dose strontium and iodine as it was found low in tank water analysis. This was 25 years or so ago. Then myself and a couple others stopped and supplemented trace elements with only water changes. Our tanks didn’t change. So for the past 15-20 years or so, I have not dosed Iodine without any visible changes to my tank. My conclusion was that water changes provided enough iodine.

What salt do you use?

Thanks, good to know you do well without supplementing iodine using IO.

I’m going to just up my water changes and get another ICP done after awhile.

What do you use for alk/calcium? Curious if there is any trace elements in what you use.

I use BRS kalkwasser and BRS 2 part for my calcium and alkalinity. Infrequently, I’ll add BRS magnesium supplement (combo of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate). Everything else is supplied with daily 1% AWC.

I use GAC passively (1/2 cup replaced every 3 weeks). No filter socks and medium skimming. I think that’s everything I do. I did a couple ICP tests a while back but never changed anything based off of their results, so I stopped.
