I like your way of disassembling the lights even befor ready to test.

One of my personal curiosities is related to the brand.

I can recognise the Cree XPG2 or 3 in the whites. Not much else I recognise.

After cutting the grid system to fit the 90-gallon test tank, draining/cleaning/refilling the tank, hanging the light, programming the quantum meter for datalogging, etc., testing is finally underway. Light is 9.5" off the water surface and the sensor is about 22" below the surface. PPFD at this depth is 184 but light will not be at full intensity until 2 pm (now 10:30 am). Attached photos: 1. Light without reflectors. 2. Light with reflectors. 3. PAR sensor on eggcrate grid. Notes: Back of aquarium is painted black. No substrate other than eggcrate hence sump area is illuminated - light is not reflected upwards.Will have more data in 24 hours if all goes well.

FYI, painting glass (any color) will cut down on PPFD...
After some investigation, it turned out that this was being caused because there is an effect where the interface between water and glass, and then the interface between glass and air, both reflect a notable amount of light back into the tank. By painting the back, you lose that glass to air reflection effect and this can cause a measurable drop in light level in the tank. I'm paraphrasing all of this based on a presentation he gave at a local club meeting a while back. Not sure where a specific and more detailed write up could be found, and also not sure what the name of that reflection effect is, but it does have a name..

Thanks. I can test this in another tank. In the meantime, PPFD at 1 pm is 272. Maximum intensity, per this program, is at 2 pm.

2 pm, light is at maximum intensity using the vendor's preprogrammed settings. PPFD = 303; watts - 160. I'll have 24-hour intensities tomorrow and will calculate total light dosage.

Photosynthetically Usable Radiation (PUR), as determined by the Seneye device, is 79-84% about 6 inches below the sensor (in air) indicating blending of differently colored light from the LEDs is pretty good. I'll look at PUR in water once the PPFD datalogging is over.

This is how the Photography Industry is using LEDs to provide a diffused light source.

With more LEDs spread out, AND densely packed. The less shadowing, self shadowing, and TV static effect. While retaining shimmer and caustics.

A diffuser panel over the LEDs is an obvious workaround, say with the XR15s, but you lose PAR and shimmer, and distance from the water surface.

The guy’s website appears to be down. I haven’t checked LEDs, specs, or anything else.

We may someday get to the holy grail of LEDs that act just like MH and T5s. They are going to be large panels, with hundreds of individual diodes, mounted close together.
