Introducing the Hydros Maven

It's interesting the complaints about the form factor with hydros, because that is one of the things I like vastly better than when I was on Apex.

The firm factor for some units is better on the hydros than the apex imo, but then others are a bit large imo.

It is not really the form factor - its the fact that the bus cables are like either 1 foot or 6 feet or 20+. And the connections really are from before the 80s…. And then there is the fact you really don’t want to coil sense wires or power wires else you make a ton of noise potentially. Honestly the system works well enough - but it would be nice if they added a control and communications hub. Plus used a more modern connector. Maybe i’ll make my own cables - but that is a good days work to just find the soldering iron in storage.

My real gripe is the thermal management - like i have 3 le’s sitting in a box - they where located closer to the pump… but they would run red and at 160f+ managing the pumps… and the x10 dosing heads occasionally stick…which is why I have like 9 sole pumps now…

IMO, your skepticism makes you a perfect beta tester. Would be nice if companies, all, got beta tester input from various viewpoints instead of the select chosen few.

Coralvue doesn’t handle any sort of feedback unless it’s 100% positive. Their decisions are 100% correct in every aspect. Everything they did was perfect and if you say otherwise you get removed from the beta test and banned from their groups including their forums. Don’t mention how idiotic it was to make the salinity probe 3 feet long “because we didn’t want electrical noise” but then they recommend a cheap extension from Amazon with another connector which yes you guessed it creates 3x the electrical noise. Makes sense right? Electrical noise is how they justify a 3’ long cord but then they say to get an extension.

Not only is there the OFFICIAL CoralVue HYDROS Community Group on Facebook, but we also have many official resources available to help with your CoralVue HYDROS experience.

Make sure you tell people how you stomp your feet and scream and cry when people prove you wrong or criticize Hydros at all and then you remove/ban them from the group. Not helpful. Just a bunch of Coralvue shills.

All of this said I trust my Hydros collective far more than I trusted my Apex. I had one of the very first Aquacontrollers. It was great. Reliable. Well built. Trustworthy. The last iteration of Apex is awful. Mine would constantly disconnect or freeze. I couldn’t trust it.

I still run an apex with a trident and MXM but that’s it. Everything else is hydros. Besides the goofy programming and arbitrary limits(no you can’t do as fine detail programming as you can apex) it has never disconnected or given me an error.

Apera makes the salinity probe and they only come with a 3ft cord regardless if you get it from Apera or CoralVue. If you want that probe then you take it with a 3ft cord. There are several manufacturers of probes that use 3ft cords.

I know who makes it. Their choice was to use it and sell it as their own because “of electrical noise” but it was really because they didn’t want the cost associated with developing a proper probe.

They do that with 90% of the line. It’s just rebranded stuff they already sold. It’s smart financially. But it’s very limiting.

Let's be clear about something—it's not really a salinity probe—it's a conductivity probe. Longer wires are going to reduce the probe's resolution and accuracy unless they are considerably higher gauge, etc.

Had someone had a brain... they would have borrowed a Milwaukee digital refractometer or someone else's similar tech and just passed the water through a lensing chamber instead of using some wonky conductivity device.

Both are bad (IMHO) for different reasons.

With hydros there are wires and tubes going in all directions and nothing is a uniform size or layout. It makes for a very large deployment in 3D space and makes for mess wire management.

With Apex there are just silly random shapes meant to be "arty" I suppose. Just wasted space for the sake of being "cool" looking. However, some of the modules do lend themselves to compact mounting and easy wire management.

I honestly wish these folks put more thought into the actual dynamics of the form factors instead of just trying to be "cool" or "different" looking.

Until they give a release date, the Maven is vaporware.

To my knowledge, the Maven hasn't been spoken of by Coralvue since April or May. Coincidentally, that's around the time the Apex Neptune NP was released. Clearly they only announced the Maven so old customers wouldn't jump ship and potential customers wouldn't be swayed by the Neptune.

The statement back in May was that the Maven will be ready when it's ready. That seems to be the rallying cry for the Hydros fanboys when anyone asks for an update. They're commending Coralvue for doing proper testing prior to release, as if that's some sort of novel concept.

I think it's still six months to a year away. If it was coming any time soon there would be some fanfare by now. Instead there's just silence. There hasn't even been a video of the device running a test in a controlled environment yet. If they can't show us how it works by now then it can't be coming any time soon.

A couple of retailers state that it'll be released in Q4 of this year, with one saying it's "announced" for November but with no source. At a trade show, one of the Coralvue guys said they'd like to get it out by Q4 of this year but didn't commit to that.

I have other Hydros accessories and am looking forward to trying the Maven out! Now I just need to find someone to take this Mastertronic off my hands......

I have 2 Apex + Trident and 1 Hydros. I’m also looking for a Maven and I agree with some comments above. The Apex/Fusion ecosystem is very refined and the UI is polished. I don’t want to start a debate war but personally for me, I prefer the Apex better.

The Trident has flaws (ugly shape, Ca & Mg readings are not accurate, can’t test less than 4x/day, etc) but I’ve learned to live with it. Sounds like me irl but my wife learned to live with me as well (so I thought)! lol

Anyway, if the Maven lives up to its promises, I will swap out both Tridents. It’s too early to speculate but one can hope that this will be a game changer in automated water testing.

It’s too early to speculate but one can hope that this will be a game changer in automated water testing.

How will it be a game changer for automated water testing? There is already automated water testing using reagents with the Neptune Trident, and Trident NP. Nothing new here outside of a single unit. Hydros does not have a previous standalone solution for Alk, Ca, and Mg so Maven brings all 5 together under a single enclosure. I'm not sure that is a game changer since Kamoer Reef Master does the same thing and Neptune already had Alk, Ca, and Mg covered so it would be sort of silly to redesign and ask existing Trident users to purchase something else. Now if you are talking about a potential feature or features that is different.

Game changer could be something along the lines of using a different tech to do automated water testing and that is covered by GHL using their probe. That is obviously still being worked through as you can read here and around the web but more are getting into the hobbyist hands. Is this a game changer not sure any of them are but my point is that it is using a different tech than reagents.

Nowhere am I suggesting one is better than the other as it related to vendor or tech. That isn't my jam so stay out of it. Game changer though caught my attention as I'm not seeing it but very well could be missing it. All good and hope your day is well.
