Introducing the Hydros Maven

Before i really respond... please see title: Village Idiot ;)

We suffered a major flood—my tank is in the basement—and I had to reroute a whole bunch of stuff to compensate quickly. Then, I tossed on the sole pumps, and ... it's pure entropy at work. I've got a lot of repairs, and the chaos is not worth fixing yet compared to the rest. Trust me, it's driving me insane, but then I have these black curtains that I just shut and enjoy my tank anyway—unless I lose my mind.

Even before the mess, the system intimidated most people who saw it (WHEN the wires were all stamped down and routed—YAY, Velcro). Hiding under that nightmare are six sole pumps, three wave engines, XP8, two x10s, 2 kraken... wires going off to X4, three xs, a launch -
and let us not forget the partridge in the pear tree.


I had to gut out 3 wave engine LEs because, just like now, even the wave engine is orange on its heat index. Below is my biggest gripe about the equipment: If you're running within the energy budget the device is capable of, it should not start overheating. The LEs would scream up to 180f and higher.

But that wave engine had 3 flow pumps (barely any draw) and the reefocto varios4s for my skimmer …. The acrylic design really sucks for heat management - considering the ambient room temp is 70.

Yep…x10, sole, minnow all have the doser motors.

Yep in a 100 percent acrylic casing - the only thing that can act as a heat sink are the metallic aircraft connectors… i’d take a unit that was as boring looking as an abyzz controller - its not like i even look at all the leds on the devices.

The dosers are no different than similar products on the market like the ecotech doser or the DOS. Enclosed and no external heat sinks.

The wave engine really was originally just designed for lower powered flow pumps. Return and skimmer pumps def push its limits. Also some of the beefier gyres are on the higher draw side as well.

Heat will depend on many factors like motor size and type, driver topology and case materials and airflow in and around the case and its volume.

I applaud them for pushing it back if it is not 100%. A bit of a letdown, yeah but I waited this long. I will never go back to Neptune-Apex. I went through four systems in a year, and it is still trash. Heck, I might even wait for Red Sea to come out with their controller ;)

Yeah pushing back release while saying they’d rather wait then money grab and release v2 next year buys some good will with me. And talking about new um shown features still gets me excited.

It's interesting the complaints about the form factor with hydros, because that is one of the things I like vastly better than when I was on Apex.

Yeah I always hated the stupid orange-pencil-sharpener-looking design of Apex.

How a design like that gets green lit is crazy to me

I hope during the delay they decide to add some probe ports to the Maven. To me it’s a big miss they are not there. Hydros touts that each device is stand alone and you only need to buy one, but can expand as you want. Well if the Maven is the stand alone device for water parameters ph and salinity probes shouldn’t be left out, and doing so drops the ball and goes against hydros marketing

Cool - glad to hear. I haven’t had that experience. My 2 Tridents are different from one another in the same tank and don’t match Hanna, esp calcium and magnesium. I’ve learned to just focus on alkalinity to be in range and ignore the rest. I’ve given up a long time ago — since I’m on a CaRx, if alk is good, calcium is good.

Yes, I’m aware that you can “code” the apex to cut power and only test once a day but really? Just give me that option inside the Trident’s schedule.

I’ve found that those who aren’t seeing accuracy in their tridents come down to a couple of things. Neptune reagents or poor calibration. Us ABC and do the tank water calibration. I’ve done it in 5+ tridents. All remained within spec.

I don’t believe it turns them off. It is literally a new schedule to my knowledge. The reason they don’t “allow” it is because they claim it can clog up the tubes. Which we know isn’t true.

Typically when a vendor delays a product launch, it’s usually not because they want to add additional features. Something is not passing QA and they want to avoid costly returns and dissatisfaction. They can always add more features and get more $$$ on version 2.0 later.

I could be wrong but I’ve personally witnessed this in the corporate world. They are not doing this to make the customers whole - it boils down to dollars and cents.

But then it isn't stand alone. You now have more complexity by adding more stuff (pH, salinity, etc).

And also raises the price
