Is this the beginning of a RedSea seam failure? I just noticed this today. I swear it wasn’t there yesterday. I wanted to get everyone’s input.

We just moved to a new house last month and this was one of my fears after moving the tank. It’s almost like I was expecting it.

Additionally I really like peninsula tanks, can I please get the community’s input on another brand that is reliable and better than this. I’m not even sure if it’s worth it to do a warranty claim.

Tank has been up and running 2.5 years. RedSea P500

Thank you 🙏

Doesn't look a like typical red sea seam failure, this one is odd since silicone where the hole is really thick and by the fact that you can see sand behind indicates it is all gone. It also most looks like something tried to bore into silicone. I remember some people saying they have seen some eunicid worms that try to bore into silicone.

Separation close to the top looks more typical red sea seam failure but it is small and not connected to the "hole" below.

I heard red sea is trash
Unfortunately I heard that after I bought this and was delivered. So I’ve been unfortunately expecting something to this degree.

Doesn't look that bad to me and not likely would be a catastrophic failure. It could start to leak in that area at some point, but I don't think you need to rush out and get a new Tank. I word of warning about Waterbox. If ordering a large Tank, be prepared to wait many months. They're shipping lead times are a total joke and they are great at making up excuse after excuse why it's taking so long. I called earlier this week about mine and they could not give me an update because some of their key personnel were on spring break.🙄

That’s not the typical Red Sea failure. I agree it looks like something bored into the silicone to create that pocket

Wish I could help more but I have no idea if this is a “oh crap go get a dozen bins” or “just watch it” territory

This is the first visible sign, yes… though, there are several factors which divide this between emergency decommissioning and simple monitoring:

— these tanks use black silicone, which is astonishingly good at hiding seam defects/etc… there is a good possibility that the silicone in that area has torn, then subsequently started to peel from the glass where the visible “hole” is… (you can examine for tearing by shining a bright point source light like your phone’s flashlight through the glass, from various angles, looking for lighter grey colored “clouds” or “bubbles” within the seam surrounding that spot that show up when illuminated [a void in black silicone transmits light better than surrounding silicone])

— can you measure how far from the outside-bottom, and outside-side of the tank this silicone hole is?
(It’s hard to tell just looking at it, I want to see if this hole is between “seam guard” and structural seam, or inside structural seam… the tank’s bottom glass pane should be at least 12mm (~1/2”) thick, so we can determine where the bubble is in relation to it by measuring!)

— assuming the hole is at least 1/2” from the outside-bottom of the tank, and you aren’t spotting any grey cloudiness propagating from the hole towards the outside-bottom of the tank; there’s a good chance that this is a non-emergency/can be monitored!

EDIT: assuming it’s a G2+ series, Google says 15mm (.590”, ~5/8”) thick bottom pane, that changes the target measurement slightly…

This could be the beginning of seam failing. If i were you, I would have buckets ready just in case.

I have about 25 buckets and a 55g brute can ready lol I’ve been looking at water box but keep seeing all the posts on here about the wait times.

What about a proactive retirement plan for the tank? — Swap everything over to a ~150g brute stock tank plumbed to your sump, and get some breathing room to make plans for the upgrade you want, vs. the one you need now!

That’s not a bad idea at all! I may end up doing this for piece of mind. Sad this tank is just 2.5 years old. I really wish I knew about their failures before I bought one. Of course here I go spending money again lol

On that note, if you feel like spending around 3.5x as much for the same stock tank size, you can actually get them with clear viewing windows!

— this might make more financial sense if you wanted to build a future massive garage sump, or any one of a number of other specialized long-term tanks!

Wow! That’s actually super cool! The 150 isn’t a bad price at all! Being fiberglass I’m assuming you can add bulkheads as normal for clean plumbing?

Yup! You can do bulkheads, an even a full external overflow box if you want to get fancy! (Or, an internal overflow box if you want to use some silicone and/or get creative with bulkheads)
