Hi everyone, just trying to ID this stuff on my acan frag. It looks really healthy during the day but tonight I noticed this stuff when it closed up for the night. It comes off very easy when I scrape it. Thanks for the help.

It looks like it could be a sponge growing on the skeleton beneath the polyps themselves to me.

#reefsquad what are your thoughts?

I agree, that does look like a sponge to me too. some sponges are harmless and will be fine too leave and are even beneficial filter feeders. Others, are invasive and can smoother that acan. Keep an eye on it, i think that one is fine though.

That would be a sponge Mr/Mrs R2R Member. 😁

Got a torch not long ago with the same stuff on it from a LFS. I ended up scrubbing it off and cleaning the coral. I try to clean corals the best I can.

Brown jelly can kill within 24-48 hours. And spreads like cancer! Disgusting!

I agree with it being sponge. You can gently scrub it off with a soft bristle toothbrush. You can also use a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and tank water when scrubbing it.
Rinse the acan in clean tank water before placing it back in the tank if you do. The peroxide won’t hurt the tank but it will stop the ‘bubbling’

I have a similar growth of sponge in my tank. Fairly certain mine is Black Liver Sponge.
