Is this Pinched Mantle?

ORA maxima. Brought it home about a week ago, seemed happy for a few days then mantle seemed to recede. Is this PM?

Agreed, definitely looks like its retracted in for some reason.

Looks like its possibly beginning to gape. I don't see pinched mantle. Doesn't look good however.

Thanks all. No gaping, nipping fish or other obvious things that I can tell. The mantle seems curled in some spots but it’s hard to get a clear picture.

This is actually a gaping clam, it gets confused with a wide open incurrent siphon. Unfortunately this clam is on it's way out I'm afraid. I don't think you did anything wrong. Many reasons why clams die and some are doomed before you put them in the tank. I wouldn't give up, instead try a derasa or squamosa.

If it went down hill in a week it's very possible it wasn't in good shape to start and there is nothing you could do.

If you still like Clams and would like to try again, go with a Squamosa or Derasa Tridacna, as they are easier to maintain than a Maxima or Crocea Tridacna. Gigas would be another choice though they grow to enormous sizes.

I will agree that most clams come in already on the downward trend. It's tough to find a healthy one anymore.

The best thing is to wait a week or so after a Clam comes into the pet shop. Then you can monitor it and see if makes it through the rigors of shipping and weather it’s a healthy specimen or not. Sometimes you can also put a deposit down to hold the one you like.

IME, a good visual inspection of the clam is always good but I also liked to get the clam home as soon as possible to give the clam proper care if it passed my visual inspection. Look for signs of pinched mantle, pyramid snails, healthy retraction of mantle from shadows and new shell growth. If your LFS does not carry them try ordering from a reputable source like pacific east aquaculture, etc. Don't be afraid to ask the vendor questions about the clam, origin, how long it's been in their care.

I passed up a beautiful derasa at my local petco for $39.99 and I had a $5 coupon smh I want a derasa. Had great response nice clean shell nice colors also it was about 2”

Do some clams stay small? my favorite fish is a Copper Band it's in another tank.but I do have a 75 reef.
A clam in a 75? would it be ok?
