Hello everyone. I am starting a new custom build. Some might think I am crazy, it's ok most people do. A little background. I got into this hobby like a lot of people. I bought 32g cube for my daughter so she could have Nemo. I was the only one who cared. This was about a year ago. After I fed my scoli (bad with names and spelling so pardon me with what I call stuff) when I saw it come alive and eat a shrimp I was floored. Since that day I built a 120g. Then I added another 120, 40g refugium, 75gallon sump under my Geo's reef sump. And 60 cube for different macro again. I am now going to attempt a large 1000 to 2000 gallon system in my basement. Now I build by feel, I make adjustments on the fly. I get ideas and run with them. So here we go.

This will be my sump. I am building it out of cinder blocks. It's roughly going to be 15 feet long,
3 ft wide, and 2 feet tall. There will be 4 large Chambers. 2 for macro algaes filtration, one for a large copepod habitat (I love those things) and a final holding chamber.

This should be awesome!

My wife thinks I'm crazy for having a tank. I can't wait to show her how your build is starting out.

Keep us updated

I didn't realize there was a large tank section in member forum. Is it possible to move this over? If not I'm going to restart in there later when I'm done with the daily progress while it's still early.

I decided to move my filters and softener today to the other wall. Got another 5 ft. For sump. Figured might as will go as big as I can. It's now 14ft long 3 ft wide and 30inches tall. I can go wider and taller but I have to cut myself off at some point.

Haven't had much time lately so I've been messing around with some ideas. I have been thinking about putting tempered glass so I can see inside the sump, any reasons not to? I will be moving the rest of my plumbing to side wall. I've decided that I don't want anything over the sump that could potentially cause a problem.

How are you going to seal that up to hold 700g +? Are you building the tank too?!

I will anchor rebar into the floor, I have 2 options for sealant either a non toxic resin or liquid rubber after a skim coat inside. Everyone always says go as big as you can, so that's what I am doing. I will be setting up many tanks to this over the years. I will be taking pictures of each stage and hopefully get some input if anyone has any concerns about my approach.

Hello again. I was just playing with this idea. The 2 Chambers in front are 3ft by 39in by 2 ft to the spillway floor. Anyone have opinions on this. I can have 5 Chambers that size. Not sure what sizes yet until I know what each one will do. I can make some smaller, I can make some slow flow and others fast. My other idea is to drill 2 inch core holes at different heights and seal in pvc. I like the idea of the spillway just wondering how much splaying and noise it will produce. I am also most likely putting a drain on each chamber. Any ideas welcome.

I want to make one large roughly 450 gallon fish tank out of glass. Then I have several 120s, cubes, 75s, 40s, that I will be putting in to house special species. A few reef tanks and basically keep on building and re building for the next 20 years.

This is my first basic layout. As I've said before I will move all the plumbing out from over the sump. And hang green board over sump right now it has 4 Chambers 3 with looking Glass. I might make a few small ones as well. As it sits it's 947.13 gallons. Once I get a final layout I am going to concrete everything and do a few water flow tests before I seal it, just in case something dosent work as I Invision
