After attempting copperbands a few times with no success I am considering adding one more tang to the gang and just curious of thoughts though I’ve read most posts already lol

At this time I’ve got 4 tangs: Kole, Yellow, Gem, and Naso, all right around 4-5 inches and established in aquarium for about a year.

My heart wants a Powder blue or brown but can’t bring myself to do it due to the horror stories of disease etc.. though I’ve never had a “known” case of ich in my tank, I just don’t know if I want to risk it.

Also considered a convict, but again, same genus as PBT etc.. scared of the risk.

Anyway, onto my thoughts of what I may attempt below, wanted to hear people’s thoughts, or opinions on these or other honorable mentions I may have not mentioned.

Powder blue or brown
Convict
Tomini
Blue hippo

Thanks all.

None - unless you have a huge tank - or an ability for a prolonged acclimation process. I would also re-examine why your copper bands are not doing well. since assumedly you will getting tangs from a similar source

I don’t believe Convict Tangs have a particularly notorious reputation for disease. They also stay relatively smaller in size (for a tang). I have one in my tank along with a Yellow Tang, White Tail Bristletooth, and Copperband. The Convict was added as the third tang. My Yellow Tang swipes at the Convict every so often. I thought I was going to have to rehome one of them but over time the aggression subsided and all the fish have learned to co-exist with each other. All my fish go through medicated quarantined so I haven’t had any disease issues.

Of all the tangs I have the Convict works hardest at picking at the rocks and is the first to the nori clip. I got it very skinny and emaciated but it ate right away and fattened up.

you are playing with fire if you are trying to add powders without going through a full QT. Also you have a a good amount tangs ready. If you plan to add more would not recommend adding 1 at a time.

187, any tang that outgrows it will be rehomed once I feel the time has come, our local aquarium accepts fish into their main displays which is nice.

The copperbands may be mostly on me, and acclimation into the display, I’ll own that. I have had 3 look healthy, active, and eat in quarantine for 30sh days, and released straight into the display (lights out for 48 hours). With that being said I’m sure it’s my addition into the tank as maybe an acclimation box may have been the best route for them. The last one made it through the first day lights on swimming around but next day home from work was sucked to the power head :(

honestly if the convict isn’t as notorious for disease as the others in the genus, that would probably be my choice.

Quarantine will be in place, as all fish have went through one, missed mentioning in original post. Main concern with the powders is if something did slip through and never showed its face that the powders would catch it is all

If your tank has been running uv, none of your other tang are showing health issues, I don’t think you will have issues with the pbt if it’s eating strong and healthy by the end of the QT. A key factor will be keeping its stress to a minimum when adding which will obviously involve keeping the other tangs off it.

Ive had terrible luck with powder blues and browns so I gave up trying. My first convict was great for 2 or 3 years then was mystery death, fine one day and dead the next morning. My current one is coming up on 5 years now. He is my best cleaner out of the all the tangs in the tank.

PS: Both were healthy and eating from the start.
