Hello R2R world!

Hello my fellow reefers! So, I haven’t been on R2R long and I have never made a build thread for my tank so I figured I would make a LATE build thread. I always have tons of questions so I thought if I made a build thread people would have more of a understanding of my tank and be able to give me better advice. I have been reefing for about five years now. Started off with a few smaller tanks that never seemed to do well. About three years ago my brother and I decided to build a tank together. We didn’t know much about that hobby but have always been fascinated by it so we built what we could with our very tight budget. I don’t think we have the fanciest tank but for what we have spent and the equipment we used I think it’s pretty amazing! So here we go!

TANK: RR 120 G Tall custom AGA 48x18x32 (has some scratches but FREE!) + FREE stand

SUMP: Used eshopps wet dry filter that was cracked and out LFS was throwing away. 36x14x16 (FREE)

LIGHTING: 2 X 400 W MH ice cap pendants with 20K XM bulbs and 1 X 48 inch reefbrite Tech strip ($500)

RETURN: Used MAG 12($50) had a free buleline external pump but it burnt out

SKIMMER: eshopps S-200 (the cup was broken and person was throwing it away FREE) $25 for new cup

Started with about 100 pounds of live rock

FISH:

Sailfin tang
Blue hippo tang
Purple tang
Kole tang
Melanurus wrasse
Leopard wrasse
Yellow clown goby
Niger trigger
Black ocellaris clownfish

Added 50 pounds more of live rock and as most have we new to the hobby we rushed to get fish in the tank WITHOUT QT! At this point we started to face our first issue ICH! we removed all the fish and added them to QT tanks.

I guess it was beginners luck but fortunately we had no casualties! About a little more then a month all the fish were added back.

Everything was going well now and then we found our first love and passion zoanthids!! lol and went to our first frag swap! lol

Now at this point the tan is doing GREAT! Everything was thriving and the fish were all healthy! BUT then here comes problem number 2! Everyday i would wake up and some zoanthids would be missing.... At first i thought they were just dying as maybe our water quality wasn't the best.... But it kept happening almost everyday for a month! I was ready to give up! lost around $2,000 in Z/P at this point. I thought it was our emerald crabs so i prepared for battle!

Got all the emeralds out but it was still happening! Time for battle again! Got the red lights out and camped out in front of the tank all night with my brother. AND THEN I SEEN HIM!!! Still don't have the ID but it was a hitch hiking crab! TWO of them! so we tore the tank apart.....

Finally got the rock out they were in and pulled them out!

Lets just say the puffer at my LFS had a nice snack the next day :p

Now back to a healthy tank! Everything was looking good!

Had a few more minor problems between now and then almost burnt the house down when a snail got caught in the drain pipe and over flowed the tank. Zoa pox was fun but short lived.. Red slime has been fought a couple of times but never seems to hurt anything... Im sure there were a few others that i cant think of right now but everything has been doing well lately...I have a few questions for the avid reefers out there and will be posting them shortly! here a few recent pics of the tank! Thanks for looking and happy reefing!!

Great tank! Also, awesome guy to deal with! One question, have you consider going to LEDs?

Thank you! Personally like the growth color and appearance of the MH. We had some black boxs on there for a little bit just sitting on top of the glass but I didn't like the way it looked. One problem that I have noticed and I'm not sure if it's the lighting or not but it seems hard for us to keep the yellow pigment in our zoos. Our bowsers and shazams have barely any yellow in them but we have sold/traded a couple of frags and the few that got them from us have a ton more yellow now! I have been trying to do research to see if maybe we need to dose something or maybe add some type of led to supplement. I was reading somewhere that UV light in the full spectrum leds bring out yellow but I can't find the article to re read it.
