I have some DIY LEDs from stevesleds and I was wondering the recommended distance from the water.

Mine do not have optics and are about 5" from the water surface. I have a standard 75.

I want to know if I'll get a broader coverage by moving them up 2-3 inches or if I should just leave them alone.

They're on dimmers so the intensity and penetration can be adjusted either way.

Thanks in advance

Depends on the # of LEDs, how powerful they are, and how deep your corals are.

^ I agree. You also probably don't want it so high the light will be spilling all over the place so keep that in mind. You've really got to play with it to see what looks and works best.

I have 72 3w LEDs. There is 48 blue and 24 white. They are similar to the crees. My tank is a standard 4' 75. I believe it is 20" deep by 18 deep?

I don't want it super high but was wondering if 7-8" would produce less of a spotlight effect than the 5" it currently is.

Thanks for the speedy replies

You shouldn't have any spotlighting without optics. Most LEDs have around a 170 degree spread.
