lessons learned (the hard way)

I was wondering if everyone could share what they thought was their best lesson, learned the hard way. so please if you have a tip or lesson about something that cost you some $$ or organisms please share your story. thanks for your time.:sad:

i must say that my lesson learned the hard way was not to get a Watchman goby/pistol shrimp pair if you plan on having corals that require sand bed placement. i had my acans, zoas, and several mushrooms all buried the next morning when i placed them on the sand bed the day before. i thought they were eaten or dragged into the cave until i saw the tiny feather duster that was on the rock sticking out of the sand. haha.... lesson learned. awesome pair and id never give them up but if i had known the extent of the sand sifting prior id have probably not have gotten them first.

indeed excellent point... it only looks like the pic imaged if you have the same setup as the photographer

unfortunate to hear about the corals, theyre pretty,and have a cool way about them but many LFS recommend them to beginners without telling them the dangers or what their tank has now been limited to containing

My biggest lesson would be Doble checking my water that I get from the store. When I 1st got into the hobby, there was a store that I used to get my r.o and saltwater from. I asked the guy to fill up my jugs, 2 were for salt and 1 r.o.
I get home do my water change and started noticing some Lps melting. I quickly started checking everything and saw that my salinity dropped to 1013. I tested the water in the jugs and found out I got 2 r.o and 1 salt. I called the store up asked them what I should do and if they can hold some of the corals until I manage to correct the salinity.they said no to the corals and said I needed to do another water change, mind you I purchased everything from this store as I was only in the hobby for maybe a few months at the time including the melting corals. To make a long story short I corrected the salinity never went back to store after the manager told me his employee gave me what I asked for and I should be more careful, Although the employee did apologize and admit to me it was a mistake which it was.

One big one I learned the hard way was when my LFS told me that Snowflake Eels are reef safe.. I lost a lot of clams...

Oh they are Long Gone.

And what a pain to get them out
