Let's talk Nori

Let's here what everyone feeds their tangs, angels, everything else that eats greens. I've been reading back and forth about nori. Apparently the Asian roasted nori is high in nitrates. I've been feeding it to my guys throughout the year but wanted to see what everyone else felt about the nitrate idea and what they give to their herbivores to supplement their green diet.

People use romaine lettuce and broccoli too. I only use nori, but will be looking into other dried seaweeds when I get some herbivores. There's not much point going too far beyond nori when I only have a few omnivores lol.
I guess the best way to test the nitrate theory would be to get two containers of tank water and sit some nori that is believed to have high nitrate in one container and nori that is believed to have low nitrate in the other and test away!

I feed grocery store nori to my tang. $3 for 10 sheets. I doubt it's much different than the kind packaged for aquarium use.

Agreed. That's an easy way to settle the debate.

There was an article or thread somewhere that gave the nutritional value of other veggies like romaine and broccoli and they just don't compare to nori. I too use the grocery store stuff.

I'm exited to try some new seaweed type foods for my fish (when I get the fish that is :P). I don't feed my carnivores the same food everyday, so there's no reason why I should feed my herbivores the same food everything day.
Any suggestions besides nori, lettuce and broccoli? I'd like to try growing some macros in a fuge and harvest them, but that's not very realistic for me at this point in time.

From what I have read the dried is more nutritional then the roasted, as the roasting process removes some nutrients. Go to a local Asian market and get 50 sheets for $8, they have red and green and all my fish go crazy for this stuff, even wrasses. Always get dried not roasted...

I feed Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies but what you get sounds like a much better deal! lol

I also buy the bulk Red and Green dried Nori from an Asian Market. I have never fed land based veggies as have read several articles as to their lack of food value and fish not being able to digest much of what is there to begin with. On occasion I will collect a few species of seaweed off our beach then rinse in RO/DI or freeze before use. All of my fish will eat the Nori directly from the clip or take pieces distributed by the Tangs, especially the Red variety.

I agree that dried is better than roasted. I feed my fish nori every day. the one spot foxface, two wrasses, and coral beauty rip it apart.

I used to feed nori from my local lfs, but then I found out LRS makes nori (I already use they're frozen reef frenzy food, so I decided to try it out). My fish go crazy over it. It's the only stuff I'll be buying from now on. The sheets are a lot bigger than the ones I was getting in my other packs so I feed 1/3 sheet per day. My tangs, wrasses, and even clowns eat it. LOL

What's everyone using for clips? I use the white suction cup models...it just seems like there's gotta be a better way. My Naso rips big chunks off and a lot of times they end up making their way to the overflow and into my filter sock.

I removed the suction cup and attached a string so I could hang it in the tank and then just pull it out once they're done. I think a magnet would be better but at least this way it's not falling in the tank anymore.
