Let's talk post count for a moment...

I saw a post earlier and the guys response was I know my post count is low but I do have exp. With this particular thing... I myself don't care but I have heard rumors that if someone has a low post count like under 1000 no one listens... Do you take post count into consideration if your taking some ones advice???:tongue:

Not usually. As you can tell by my post count I don't post a lot but I have been in this hobby for almost 20 years and I think if you look at my tank I know a little about what I am doing. I just don't have much time to sit down at the computer everyday to post.

I dont think it matters at all.But I want to get to know a person a bit before I take their advice and they have just made an account,and have 5 post.Post count dosent matter,but it does at the same time if that makes since.

no, however i fact check most things i read... you could always be a reefer that just started on this forum but had been on other forums, for one reason or another, for years. the info provided usually is what leads to fact checking, vague short comments i always fact check, but in depth responses explaining intricacies usually tips me off that they know what they are talking about (but i still 2x check)

Someone can have 1000 posts and everyone of them be a bunch of crap. Where as someone can have 17 posts and be very knowledgeable. When considering the validity of someone's statement a person should look at the substance of the message and determine if it is of any use to them. I've grown to understand that knowledgable people open their mouth when necessary and where warranted... while other people who like to hear their own voice run their mouth constantly regurgitating a bunch of garbage and opinion, attempting to perpetrate it as well known fact.

Only time post count comes into play with me is when im buying and selling and its not some one we all know. On the other hand does that mean this contest it making use all albert E. of the hobby?

I don't usually look at post count unless the respondent suggests something completely out of left field. Most of the time multiple people will agree with what one individual says. That makes it easy to trust the opinion, regardless of post count.

I don't ever look at post count. Now that everyone is competing and the junk posts are increasing it makes it even more pointless to use that as a judge of experience.

Like others, I don't typically even notice. Until somebody puts their foot in their mouth, and then I look, smile, and move on. Does pose an interesting question though.

I guess I am rare in that I do at times glance at someones post count. It certainly is no judge of a person's knowledge. It can I think be an indicator to some extent that they have been involved in the hobby awhile though. Junk posts aside if someone has 5k posts that tells me they been around awhile. If they tell me to dump antifreeze in my tank I not gonna trust them or research it any further. If they say something that sounds a bit wierd but sounds like it might have a bit more merit I am more likely to look further into it than someone who has 5 posts.

Not to say the person with 5 posts does not have experience. I only started posting here this week and I been in the hobby a long time. Just saying I do use it as a factor.

Then of course there is post count as it relates to buying/trading. I dont solely go by that, but if I see a post count of 5 from someone selling me something I would be much more worried he is a scammer than someone with a post count of 5,000.

Me too...I got to get used to the person's name and kinda see if they seem respectable and if they usually give off good advice..but post count doesn't matter to me.

I don't think post count matters when it comes to advice. There are alot of different ways to do things in this hobby. Everyone has an idea. Some are good some are bad and some are maybe. You can rack up a post count just by saying you like someones pics. If you post on a thread you get one more post count.
