Losing power = losing sleep

I moved and we have a new power company and the electric goes out ALL the time.

Last night we had near freezing temps and the power went out... I was seriously stressing about the tanks--I couldn't even sleep.

What do you do when the temps outside are cold and you're trying to keep your reef warm? Aside from getting a generator, what solutions are there? Keep your fingers crossed and hope the power comes back soon? :crossedlips:

For warmth without a generator there are few options. If it is chilly and I don't have any option I take a warm thick blanket and cover the tank to insulate it as much as can. Of course leaving an area open for it to "breathe."

An inverter in your care should be able to run a small heater I would think. Computer battery back up?

PRAY!!!!!!! And go to Walmart and buy a generator. They have small one that runn half my house for $189. When u have 400+ gal of reef in your house Praying is good but A reliable backup plan is a MUST. Protect your investment!!

Generator or some way to create heat in the house like a fireplace or wood stove. Otherwise no other way to do it.

It's got to be the worst feeling in the world....power goes out...and you're just sitting there waiting.

battery backups will run heat and a current maker and thats all you need. people have also made there own with deep cycle batteries that last several hours, might look into that. if u can keep heat and water movement the tank will be fine. only other options is a generator or inverter but then u gotta run the car and a extension cord from it... and well that just looks weird and i wouidlnt wanna leave my car running outside lol

Actually the tanks handle cols far better than heat.

A simple solution would be to go buy some Styrofoam
sheets and cut pieces to wrap around the tank.

That will slow down the heat loss.

I've lost power for days before.
