The swamp has some update.

1
The velvet damsel was caught and moved into the swamp. He also has been named Stalin.
2. I wad missing my yellow corris wrasse for about 2 weeks. Today I found it in the fluval fx4.

3.
To accommodate the wrasse 40lbs of Bahama oolite has been added. Since adding the sand the fish have been more active

The swamp looks a lot different with sand. 40lbs added for the wrasse. Since he with the problem fish I need to make his stay more comfortable

Floating these is not a good way to get growth. Typical reef tanks dont have the amount of required nutrients in the water to support good growth. You need a substrate that the roots can pull needed nutrients from. We have a 6' tall one at the lfs wish it'd been pruned properly but it has multiple branches. It is and was grown in substrate. Maybe since I'll be in the area today I'll get a pic.

I think people do have success with having them grow without starting them in substrate. Mangroves do grow frequently in nutrient poor soils, but I don't know what levels of N, P, Fe, or other nutrients are actually limiting for growth, since they tend to be efficient at using nutrients.

I feel like inland_reef has discussed sometimes starting the propagules suspended and letting them grow roots down (https://www.instagram.com/inland_reef/) I would have to go back and listen to Tyler's interview on Reef Therapy ()
[I have only grown mine in substrate, so have no personal experience here. Will maybe try in the future to see the difference]

I remember he actually discussed how much he has found that they like flow.

Noops have been removed from the swamp. I replaced with t5ho grow lights. I'm thinking the the noops where to harsh of a light and not the right spectrum.

I have noticed with t5ho plants grow so much. I have switched all my t5ho bulbs to sunlight supply led t5s and they really work well too. They make a grow blue, white and "uv" leds and a bloom orange, red, blue and white more focused on the red and orange. I use a combo over my pond as my bog lily will put out flowers that will bloom with the bloom bulb, the flower pod just dies without it. Once I get the 180 up and the 65 breeder set up as a fuge with mangroves I will use the grow over them to see if they like it. I know aquatic fresh water plants and tropical house plants love them.

Thanks. It all kinda of happened. Lost my 120 had this set up as a qt and an local reefer asked if anybody wanted mangroves. I took him up on the offer and poof the swamp was born.

That’s awesome. I’m hoping to grow some mangroves in the new tank, though I’ve never had much luck with them.
