Maroon clowns

Since the wife has been so understanding with everything I've let her pick our first fish, maroon clowns... however after talking To my LFS I've learned they are a**holes and hard to pair. Anyone have experience otherwise? Rather not have my first fish ever dictate the rest of my tank

Yes. They are very territorial and hard to pair.

How big is your tank?

90 gallon.

It’s a big enough tank. I had a Maroon pair in a six foot tank and they were a handful. Most other fish they completely ignored, but the female was a brute if she took a disliking to something. Also, plan on painful bites if you put your hand in the tank.

Other than that they are beautiful fish and I had no regrets keeping them. I may have gotten lucky, but had no issues pairing Maroons. An acclimation box was key....

I have a pair of gold stripe Maroons in QT now and I’d say they are 90% paired. I had to put a divider up for the last week and dose Furan 2 to allow a bite mark on the males face to heal without getting infected. The female is a brute but if you use an acclimation box it is easier but you still need to watch them.

Maroons are jerks but my favorite of all clowns that was my first fish when I did my first tank 20 years ago not knowing anything about saltwater I jumped in had the clown and some Xenia in a 5 gallon tank lol they lived happily for about 3 years in that little tank before I transferred them into a 50 gallon

I saved or got a pair form petco believe it or not. Both where small and i have been doing fine in my 30g tall show tank for over 5 months and yeah they split the tank in half as in territory but rather then that it’s fine. They don’t attack other fish nor do they try to bite me but I also have multiple anemones for them to host so its keeps to little aggression in the tank down since they have less to fight over. I’ve got a pair of black and white clowns that are more aggressive cause in the end it boils down to the specific fish not just the type.

She hasn’t tried to bite you.......... yet lol.

Give her time to put on a few more inches and start spawning. I think they wait until they are sure they are big enough to draw blood :rolleyes:
