I’ve been using Four E’s 10mil and 1mil to pull water and reagent for consistency, precision and that I wiped all the 10mil lines off the mixing vials and replacements are expensive. It was a better spend to buy the tools and get precise consistent samples. The question I have is that (don’t laugh) I didn’t know there was a Hanna high range nitrate kit. So I ordered it and I got 2 new vials with 10 mill white lines. My scales are calibrated and it matches whatever you call this Four E tool, as you can see in the picture. But, 10 mil is 9.7 mil. Hanna is already +/- .05, so I really don’t want to add to that. Should I go with Mil of actual liquid sample or 9.7 which is the white lines? (2 photos show me with this set to 9.7 and where it is compared to the line and the other set to ten and the same)

I use a 10 mL syringe and always use that for consistency.
Not all of the Hanna vials are marked perfectly/consistently (if it matters much).

Just so I understand:
Are you using weight to decide how much to put in?
If so, are you compensating for the fact that saltwater is denser (so heavier) than freshwater?
...not sure if I was following what you're doing so just checking

RHF recently posted about the phosphate vial line with the reply that as long as the water level was high enough so that the beam of light was not disturbed by the water surface the test would be fine.

I am not certain if this applies to all Hanna Test Kits, but for some it must.

FWIW, the exact volume is not very important in a color intensity test. :)

It is important in a titration test.

First, no I didn’t compensate for that. When I filled the vial with 10mil and it went over the line, I grabbed my scale emptied the bottled, set it to zero and then refilled it. It went over the line again, so I put it on the scale and it matched my handheld device I am using to pull the sample.

Perfect. This is what I needed. So, in my Salifert kits, these really pay off. I only use Hanna for DKH, NO3 and PO4. Salifert for everything else.
