I think that’s part of it for mine. It’s only about 3” so still very young. Not quite a baby but I’m making sure it’s well fed and it’s a super mature tank with plenty of microfauna to pick at. My ornate leopard happily snacks in the rocks too!
Yes! You really want to have a mature tank. When I got mine, my tank was maybe 6 weeks old which probably wasnt the best idea. He was my first fish.

I fed him a lot though, and he grew. Now that my tank is 2 years old, all he does is patrol all day eating worms and stuff. He turns his nose up at pellets, but will eat any frozen that I give. Long as they are fed, they'll be fine.

It's amazing to watch them dive into the sand. I just saw him do it a few minutes ago. It's so fast and he makes it look like the sand is water.

I don’t have that many fish. 10 I think. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I love lots of fish. I let my Reef Octopus Sort it out. Find the right combos and give them plenty of places to hide and wander, and you're golden. A reef is supposed to have a lot of fish.

If you like the colors of the Melanurus, perhaps try to find a Halichoeres claudia instead. It will be much more similar to the yellow chrysus wrasse in temperament and reef safedness.

I would still imagine your nerites are toast. My wrasses would pop them off the glass and go to town. Ceriths also. So far my Astreas and Trochus have fared well. Money cowries also do well, and they are an excellent, long-lived CUC. My conches take care of the sand bed and are generally left alone.

I feed roughly 2.5 cubes worth 3 times a day, as I have athias, blue chromis, and garden eels. I'm paranoid trying to make sure everyone gets well fed.
Gonna need some pics of those garden eels

They eat like pigs, move every so often, and don’t seem to mind any of their tankmates. These guys were my second fish in the tank. The ornate tends to burrow in that corner too. One of my baby clowns occasionally tries to get them to host him…

I found mine to be reef safe. I have a wrasse dominated tank and so far I think i only lost one porcelin crab. The other pretty much camps the BTA as in rarely leaves it. I call him a wanna be clown. The wrasses i have are

Melanarus (Juvie so looks like a 6 line)
Yellow Coris
Blue star lep (female) I got her eating on the first try on pellets/frozen and is a very aggressive feeder
Carpenter flasher
Royal pencil wrasse

They all get along. My cleaner is pretty big but he isnt scared of the wrasses.
I will say the Melenus and Coris patrol the water constantly so I cant probably ever get bristle worms as they would be a fast snack. I've only seen them nip once at my chestnut turbo but my 2 Mex turbos are fine.

The dead porcelin if i had to guess was the work of the yellow coris not the mel. Other than that dont really have a problem with my mel.

Yeah, I've got a bunch of fatties in my tank. I'm what most would consider overstocked - especially with 5 Clownfish?

I thought my 4 was 'bad', but the first 2 have been very amendable to the newcomers. One of the smaller ones just recently went mia, but given my current tank personalities I'm more inclined to think he went on a hunger strike then got killed.

So all I read was “order more fish.” Got it!

I’m actually trying to find a candy stripe basslet. Want one of them and maybe another fish or two or ten. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
