Modularmarine Overflow

Hello. I’m thinking about getting Modular Marine’s 1200gph overflow. Has anyone had experience with this. They say they have two 1” bulkheads through the tank and two 3/4” and one 3/4” emergency bulkheads coming out of the overflow. I’m concerned that’s not enough flow for my 90 gallon tank. I plan on using two 1” or 3/4” return lines spit from my pump. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks!!

1200gph should be more turnover than you need for a 90g tank.
Consider flow inside the tank and tank turnover flow as two seperate things.

Great overflow, I have two on my 200g tank.
One will be fine for a 90.
I run 2 return pumps and it works well.

I’m extremely happy with mine. I use the 1600gph model on my 75g but only pushing 300gph through it. No reason to put more than 4x your tank volume through the sump. More just skims less efficiently and carries microbubbles to you tank.

That’s good to hear. Do you have 3/4” bulkheads coming out of the outside overflow box?

Mine has 1 inch. I don’t need anywhere that capacity but I figured more would give me a longer between cleaning the weir.

I got the exact same overflow for my 90g when I was planning on it before switching plans to 125g tanks. They are good quality and should provide plenty of turnover for your 90g.

Due to increased overall volume, I ended up also buying a 1600gph MM overflow that is not in use yet.

For returns, I would recommend using 2 pumps rather than just splitting the lines. This gives some redundancy in the case of emergency pump failure and gives more options for dialing in your system or adding reactors, etc. in the future.

I just ordered a custom 1200 gph one from Modular Marine. my tank already has 3/4 holes drilled, so I will not get the full 1200 gph on the stock 1 in holes. I am also on a 60g tank, so I think you should be fine with the 1200gph. Looking forward to receiving mine and glad everyone seems to like theirs!

I have a 65g looking at the 1200, what made you choose the 1600?

Capacity. I figured a bigger one pushing less water would ensure it’s quiet as possible.

I’m sure for your 65g the 1200 would be fine.

Not maxing out the capacity makes sense, I’m glad I kept looking instead of going with a 800 impulsively. This might be a silly question, but does water drain out 2/3 pipes? I have a 20cube sump, and trying to figure out my flow. Wanted to do a reefmat but only the 250 fits without mod, which is max 900gph. I’m wondering if this is enough for future corals?

Yes the full siphon and partial drains always have water going. Through them. The emergency never does, unless there’s an emergency.

As for your reef may, I can’t fathom why you would every need more than say 500gph going through the sump on a 65g tank so you should be fine.

Thank you for the insight and piece of mind. When I started this I bought a few things impulsively - stepped back a month to keep researching and the way everything plays off one another, it’s helpful to hear from experienced users on what to expect. Definitely trying to limit future upgrades.

I saw you had some apex strips, do you mind me ask how you like their systems? I was leaning towards hydros but I just realized not all my equipment list would function with it besides on and off

Oh I wanted to ask how long it took for your custom? I wanted the 1200 low profile box - but with the 1” drains instead of 3/4”.. which they don’t recommend apparently.

I wouldn’t put 1” drains on the 1200 or 1600

Can I ask why not? I’m down to debating the 1200 with standard 3/4, or custom 1600 but in 12” length (basically to include 1” drains).
