i snagged up a custom built ~230 gal peninsula for 900 bucks. Still in the crate with original plastic on it. I’m currently working on building a stand and I’m looking to piece together my dream tank (currently toying with the idea of an apex system)

Anywho, I was playing with the idea of gyre power heads, what’s everyone’s take on them? I’ve heard mixed reviews. Should I spend the coin on a couple mp40s? Tank is a mixed reef lps dominate.

I’m also gonna need a protein skimmer if anyone has input on one. I’ve been looking at a skimz sv257, as I’m wanting a skimmer for a heavy bioload.

Any input is greatly appreciated

How long have you had your gyre? Why do you like it?

So if you want the Gyre style flow, definitely go for the Jebao Cross Flow pumps instead of the Maxspect version. Its like 1/3 the price, and pretty much identical performance. You can see them on ebay.

I always mix and match pump types. Vortechs provide a single laminar stream across the tank, while gyres are good for mass water movement.

I just got one of the icecap 3k gyre pumps. I would recommend two of them for your tank and go from there. They put out some serious flow. Really well priced too.

Mine is an Icecap 1k. It’s made by the same company that makes the Maxspect but it’s $100 cheaper. Granted it’s not as heavy duty as the Maxspect but it works beautifully. I like it because it’s reliable. I’ve been using it for two years continuously and it’s never failed. I can’t say the same about too many other pumps.

A good friend has MP40's... I'm a bit sensitive to whine, and these things whine. I'll never own one, couldn't stand the noise.

I bought a MaxSpect Gyre. I was initially impressed... they do indeed move a lot of water. Odd form factor makes placement a bit of a challenge, but not a big deal. In the end, I sold it off... hard to maintain. Cleaning the thing was a huge pain.

The IceCap version of the Gyre is NOISY! Don't know how they are to clean, but I couldn't stand the whine.

I bought Rossmont Mover pumps. 2 at first, ended up adding 2 more, and a Waver controller. Simple, clean, move a TON of water, and as long as you're not kicking them on and off with an Apex (which I was, at first), they're darned near silent. The Waver controller lets you cycle them up and down in speed... without making much, if any, noise.

Don't know what Rossmont's opinion on this would be, but I used a couple of 110VAC 'Y' connectors, and plugged all 4 of my Mover pumps into a single Waver controller. Works fine :)

Oh, skimmers... I've had many, over the years. Never had one that was as trouble free as my Vertex.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I’m going to look more into the gyre.

Also, my tank is 6x27x27.5 3/4 inch glass

I’m also thinking I might do a mixed pump setup. Idk yet.

Be mindful of magnet strength for any pump you select as 3/4” glass is quite thick.

I have the Ice cap 3k. I completely take it apart every 3 months using a vice to get the motor block apart. Every 3 cleans I change all the bushings. All replacement parts are available at Coral vue. If it wasn't for the maintenance, I would say 5 stars.

If you are considering an APEX you would be crazy to not consider running WAV's with it. They are inexpensive, put out a ton of flow, and are powered by the EB8 32. Programming them is a breeze, and you get a chart of turnover on your FUSION page. For the money you really can't beat them. The only places that I seem to see gripes about them are in tanks that are smaller because they don't dial down all that far. I have 4 running in my Waterbox 230.6, which is a 160 gallon display. Love them! I have 2 that aim directly across the tank at mid height, and 2 that aim back towards the rockwork a bit just a tad higher to ensure the SPS have tons of flow. There are so many different flow areas in this tank it is ridiculous. Love these pumps! Only $350 for a pair of them! Again, they DO require you to run an APEX, but if you are it really helps make up for some of the cost of the controller!

How long have you owned them for? I only ask because I have seen numerous reports of long term reliability issues with them failing at around the 1-1/2 to 2 year mark.

9 months. Can't speak to that, I guess. Even if they did pop out in that time frame I can replace them and be less than the cost of an MP40 for each one, though. I understand that the MP40's also have a tendency to self diassemble as they age... lol. I guess we are talking about pumps that operate at high speeds in salt water continuously. Something's going to give sooner or later
