I figured I'd start a new thread to keep things cleaner. For those who don't know I have a @Biota_Marine captive bred male mandarin and I purchased a wild caught female from a LFS that was skinny at first. I quickly trained (or should I say the Biota mandarin trained her) to eat pellet and frozen food.

My tank is a 35 gallon cube (20"x20"x20") with a Sapphire 34 sump with a refugium and an 8'ish gallon remote display refugium. I culture Tisbe, Tigger and Apo pods (two one gallon cultures of each) and dose about 450ml of phyto (7 strains) to keep the pod population and all my NPS corals happy. I also have white worms cultures and have an @Printed Reef mandarin feeder setup and two brine shrimp hatchery dishes for feeding tank freshly hatched BBS.

I must be doing something as I have fattened up the wild caught mandarin quite well and rather quickly. I first put her in the remote display fuge as it was packed with pods and I got her eating TDO in there. I figured it was better than a small acclimation box in the DT.
About two weeks ago I noticed the male and female mandarins were acting differently and paying waaaaaaayyyyy more attention to each other during the daytime and the male was flashing his dorsal fin a lot so I set up a Wyze camera to see if they were breeding. Sure enough I saw them do the spawning dance up to the top of the tank and saw the cloud of eggs and sperm!

Since then I've been tracking their spawning with the camera (not the best) to get times and days. I have it down where I can tell based on their behavior right before lights go off if they'll spawn. Spawning typically happens 7:38-8:20 pm. It appears to be almost every night at this point unless I forget to feed the tank or I go down and turn on the basement lights after 7pm or the Wyze camera doesn't record and I have to reformat the microsd card!

Tonight they did the spawning dance for almost 6 minutes. I can't tell if it was multiple spawns or just attempts that were messed up by the flow. I plan to experiment and turn 1 or both of the powerhead off around 7:40 pm for about and hour and see if that improves anything.

Eventually I will try and capture the spawning on my cell phone to get much better footage but for now the Wyze camera works for tracking purposes. It is a bit tideous to watch back the footage on my cell but it's been doable so far.

Stay tuned for more updates as they come! Just need to get off my rear end and start my parvo pod cultures and plumb a larvae and grow out tank after that! I already ordered some of the smallest TDO pellets in anticipation and plan to get some frozen copepods for frozen food training if I am lucky enough to capture the eggs and try and raise them!

Here's two minutes of tonight's spawning dance attempts!

Wow . Good luck ! Very cool .
Thanks!
That is super neat and was interesting to watch! Thank you for sharing :D
Thanks!

Been tracking them since and they've been spawning at night except last night. I put my what I am hoping (and now assuming since she wasn't killed) orchid dottyback in the tank from my QT tank last night and saw the male Indigo dottyback trying to seduce her and vibrate his body.

It turned a little more aggressive and he was going after her and trying to grab her tail so I shut off the light for the night to give her some peace and quiet. Went downstairs this afternoon and didn't see her until I fed the tank and she popped right out!

Hopefully the mandarins will spawn again tonight with lights being back on schedule!

Couldn't quite catch the male Indigo jerking around but I'd love for them to be a mated pair then I'd have 3 sets of breeding fish!

Haven't gotten as consistent of spawning since I put the orchid dottyback in the DT. She is definitely a she and the male indigo dottyback goes crazy as the lights go out trying to get her to breed. Couple that with the fact I changed around the timing of the display fuge's light and the apothecary tank's lights I think that has thrown them off.

The Wyze camera has been driving me nuts as well but tonight I was able to watch it and noticed they started to court each other much later than what I had been tracking so far as I think the light schedules played the biggest factor.

The @Biota_Marine male was putting the moves on for several minutes before I captured the spawning. I tried to get a good screen shot of him flaunting the front dorsal fin!

The couple spawned, or at least looked like they spawned as they did the dance multiple times in 23 minutes last night.

I am back at work tonight and I work in the town I live in so I might try and come home and watch live and get a better video if I'm free at work!

This is very cool and I wish you luck, I never tried to raise the fish but they do spawn quite often. I only caught it once with a camera.

I wasn't able to swing home tonight to try and get better video tonight but I am working tomorrow night so maybe I'll try again!
Cant wait to see how you go! Good luck
Thanks! I can't wait either!

It's interesting how much lighting changes affects breeding. I have changed the phyto and apothecary light a few times due to unplugging what I thought was a light with those push buttons being able to turn on/off with a timer as some of mine do and some don't.

That being said the mandarins haven't really spawned in two nights since I last changed the apothecary light that somehow was on until midnight!

Haven't checked the footage in a few days but had time this morning to check last night's video and I could tell by the way the @Biota_Marine male and wild caught female were interacting that the magic was going to happen! I haven't been feeding the tank as consistently but I did finally set up an automatic pellet feeder that feeds the tank 3 times a day in the back corner where the mandarins know to eat!

Me too! It's been status quo for a bit and I haven't been watching the footage and feeding tank as much as I'd like to but I did a water change finally yesterday and the mandarins both still looked super fat and there were still plenty of pods on the DT glass!!!

Since you set up a pellet feeder has their behavior changed?
I haven't had time to check the cameras as much and I had to take the pellet feeder setup offline and need to redesign the cone so that it goes inside the pipe. The old setup the pipe went into the cone and the lip inside caused pellets to get stuck!
Would love an update on this! :)
I have been way too busy at work but had some time and was able to try and watch some fish breeding live tonight with no luck. My male Indigo dottyback was trying extremely hard to lure my really fat female Orchid dottyback into his nest tonight thought!

The male mandarin was just sitting in the corner with the female with his fin up and occasionally trying to tempt her. I eventually gave up just before 9 as I have to get up early for work but got a decent video of him trying to get her in the mood!
