My SPS & Clam Tank

It was either this or dose fenbendazole. 🙂
That angel food that people were using for aefw works great! I was feeding the fish in my frag tank with it as a precautionary cause I had some wild acros in there.. it wiped out my firework clove polyps in a week lol.. I guess they stopped selling it now that fenben they can’t get now. 🤔. I got a huge bag left as I took that tank down lol.

I know feeding fenbendazole was an option. I just didn’t really believe it could work because how can feeding something that can cause clove polyps to die not have an effect on other things in the tank?

Then I read cases where people actually dosed high concentrations of actual fenbendazole, but the cloves still returned. It just didn’t make sense to me.

Also, I keep a lot of clams, and nobody really tested it with them. They are filter feeders that can potentially consume the food.

In addition, the clove polyps were isolated to a single, large rock. I just removed it and an adjacent one to make sure I got them all.

I took the harder path, yes. I just didn’t want to think about this issue anymore. Now I don’t have to worry about them.

I had zero issues with a clam in there and tons of sps.. did wipe out the cloves, I thought it was crazy lol..

Well dang. Then I did all that work for nothing. Uch.

I think you’ll be happier in the end with what you did but…. In the future it works and works well! At least the angel green flake food did!

Thank you.

It’s just that last year I lost most of my clams from dosing fluconazole for bryopsis. I was afraid of losing the clams again.

Yeah.. it kind of sucks. I hope it will look better in the future. I’m getting a lot of acros soon, and I’ll target them all on the new area.

But yeah, this absolutely sucks. I wish I learned about this yesterday when I was contemplating it. I thought it would kill the clams.

I am starting the sterilization process to eliminate clove polyps.

Some of the clams are currently upside down, attached to the rocks in the tank. They’ll be fine lol

@Uncle99 Thanks for the courage.
It’s a lot of work, I understand.

When it’s finished, I think you’ll be much happier.

The kicker is even if you treat and nothing dies, some report a return of same.

I’d hate to see stuff die in such a nice set up and think that I recommended that. There’s no guarantee of anything being safe, other than just pulling the rock.

I did research about the food on Friday. I saw this:
I will add that it takes a few days or a week for them to start to wilt. Then they slowly die for another few weeks. They can come back if you stop feeding, so just feed the flake food for 3-4 months. If they start to come back, just feed some more. You can feed twice a day if you want, but I am not sure if it is better, or not. I got the large bag and fed my fish a normal amount nearly every day.

The clove polyps were already completely covering an acro base. I didn’t want to wait weeks or months and constantly have this in my mind. I didn’t want to chronically add medication foods to my tank.

I even wrote this in my fenbendazole thread on Friday night:

Thank you.

I’m going to take your advice and rip apart any rock that was infected by it. It won’t be easy, but I don’t think there’s a better option.

I did some forum searching, and despite some people heavily adding Fenbendazole, they still returned.

I read positive results with feeding Fenbendazole foods, but the original source is out of stock, and I’d rather just fix the problem on a Sunday afternoon instead of constantly worrying about this for months or years or risk harming my inhabitants.

I tried to be as rational as possible when making this decision. Yes, it still hurts knowing that it might have been a waste, but I don’t think I was impulsive. I had a day to think it through and I weighed the pros and cons.

But yeah, it still sucks. At least I have more rocks and hiding places for the next batch of fish…they’re gonna need it.

I know pirates reef ending getting a bunch of the flake food and rebranding it for aefw and then the angel site said it was discontinued due to not being able to source the fenben or something.. I think the people with a bag are lucky mike myself cause it’s gone now! I guess once the reef world caught on who ever shut it down lol…

1) The new rocks look fantastic. I’m actually really happy with them. I fixed them up yesterday, and it is very aesthetically pleasing.

2) The final lot (Dr. Reef) is officially completed. They are ready to be shipped. They finished their QT.

Well, since the 3rd lot is the most special I'm guessing they're not a Yellow Clown Goby and a Black Clown Goby.

This will take some thought.

Happy Wednesday!
