I will try to give as honest of a report of my experience as possible and would appreciate others opinions of the situation.
Earlier this week I purchased a chalice pack from twinspot_goby to include My Miami and several other high end chalices. The other chalices in the pack helped make the deal worth the price for me, but the My Miami is what I really wanted from this deal. On Tuesday night I sent him a pm inquiring if the pack was still available. I very quickly received a PM back saying "Man! you just came in at the right time. I was waiting for payment from another person. But money talks. if I get your payment first, it's yours." I should have reconsidered the deal when I saw that, but I immediatly sent money. Communication was excellent and the pack went out the next day as promised via FedEx. On Thurday morning when FedEx delivered some other frags I was expecting I became very concerned that his shipment was not there. I tracked it online and made a phonecall to determine that the package had been held up in Memphis due to storms on wednesday night and that I would be receiving it Friday before 10:30 am. I became very concerned as I had a significant amount of money invested in this shipment, I had done nothing wrong and I was helpless. Twinspot-goby made some calls to FedEx and seemed genuinely concerned but was not able to get anywhere with them either. The pack arrived at my work on Friday. I immediatly opened the box and everything was still warm. I took a quick glance at some of the frags and they looked alright. Friday is a tough day for me to leave work, but I managed to get home within an hour or so of receiving the pack. I typically don't do a long acclimation with my corals, but under the circumstances I did it slowly over about an hour and a half. The lights were not on in my tank at the time so I was not able to take a real good look at anything. On one of the frags I noticed some strange white marks on the plug that looked like scrapes from cutting the disc, but there was a large pink chalice frag(or so I thought) next to the scrapes. At that point I sent him a PM stating that the package was still warm and at a glance everything appeared to be doing fine but I needed to get back to work and would not be able to check them out under good lighting until I got home. Friday evening I came home and went straight to the tank. The first thing I noticed was that the scrapes I thought I saw earlier was actually the skeleton of the My Miami chalice and the bright pink chalice I saw on the plug was actually a big bright pink piece of coraline algae. I sent him a pm immediately explaining what I saw and asking for confirmation that it was the My Miami. He confirmed, but said nothing else. Now I understand that a seller typically does not take responsibility for losses due to shipping delays and he did not specifically offer a live arrival guarantee, but what I paid for was the My Miami chalice and 3 others delivered to me in good condition and I did not receive that. He did nothing wrong on his end, his communication was excellent and I would not expect for one minute that he should be responsible for the entire loss, but on the other hand should I take the full loss myself? Should I be out $1000+ dollars with nothing to show for it through no fault of my own? The best soultion to the problem that I could get from twinspot_goby was to "accept my loss and move on". The frag was claimed to have healed for a month and the picture shown could have conceivably been healed, but the disc the chalice was growing on had been cut in half to create my frag and the cut edge was a bright white that just screams relatively fresh cut. I would like to think that any reasonable seller on here would consider offering up something(no matter how small) to help offset the loss and make things right and/or ease the pain of such a significant loss. I understand that he made the initial investment here, but this was an eye that grew basically for free and is likely to grow back for free. This was more or less pure profit for him and no money lost out of his pocket. If I am wrong about this please let me know, but I personally would not sleep well it night if I, as a seller, treated a buyer this way. I know that most people will likely answer that he is not responsible especially considering the fedex delay and the fact that I did not notify him of the loss the minute the shipment arrived, but what I want to know is how would a good seller actually handle this situation? What is the morally correct thing to do in this situation?
