Hey guys,
Need more input on this. i got a unreal deal on a 48" giesemann neptune-pro, 250w 14k phoenix , 2x 48" T5 actinic supplements 40lbs. going onto a 72" acrylic tank that is next to staircase so no wall behind to mount. room has vaulted ceilings/to tall to hang. so my only option is to build either a amano style light "arm" or zero edge type "light tree" using piping. but since i have an acrylic i need to have the ability to raise the light up and down. also the issue of getting into the tank is another problem. and my tank is about 30" deep. :squigglemouth::squigglemouth::squigglemouth: any suggestions???

I just built something similar. I pickup some 1/2" aluminum conduit pipes from Home Depot and bent it. I would've went 3/4" but my dad had a 1/2" bender, and I'm hanging a DIY LED fixture. I skipped the heatsink, so the fixture will be 3-4lbs max. I imagine the Giesemann fixture looks pretty beefy, you'll probably need thicker piping. G'luck!

thanks GenX! that looks sick. great DIY! yeah, the giesemann is about 40lbs. HEAVY! i think conduit ridgid 1 inch will hold the weight. i like that design you got.

UPDATE ok so had the day off. decided to go with GenXʻs light tree style. so rolled out of my local hardware store with 1/2" ridgid conduit, gb pipe bender, heavy duty brackets and wood screws. even bought an accessory that attaches to my drill so i can drill behind my tank stand. ok ready to rock.... inserting pipe into bending tool.....first pull, here goes....crack.....what the heck>!??!?!?!?! one small tug and the pipe bender cracked. upon investigating the interior of the bending tool itʻs a cheapy constructed item...ok i got suckered. so back to the store i go later this evening... will post pics up

I had a light rack that I mounted to the stand put together for pretty cheap by a local welder. Hopefully the conduit works for ya but if not I'm sure there are some local welders that would do it for a good rate.

I'd try and have a welder build something like this. It's clean and sleek and I think it should hold if it's made well.

Look @ my link in the post above yours. Otherwise think about checking out a bird store. Like, a place that sells bird feeders etc. You can always use a bird feeder hanger or something.

wow thats really nice and really slick! but can it handle 40lbs of giesemann neptuepro? the weight in the fixture is what really makes it a challenge. thanks for all the input guys! i really appreciate it and i hope this thread will help others in my situation! anyways here's a pic of after "the tug" .

Mike, I'm the total opposite of a DIYer as well, but I managed to make one for my aquarium following these steps (same as GenX described): DIY – An Inexpensive (Light) Hanger Kit - Reefkeeping.com

I did splurge on a heavy duty pipe bender... darn thing was about $75! But... I took it back after I bent the pipe :D Shhh!
