You guys need to watch the Redsea video on YouTube for the magnesium test. The end point is when it first turns blue, not when it stays blue.

What's the point of the plastic tips? We aren't doing titration like in other tests.

The Hanna Ca works perfectly well with distilled and RODI. The instructions actually state to use RODI.
The problem most have is with the 0.1ml pipette and trusting the line on the cuvette.

If you use a lab grade micropipettes to measure everything it works fine.

For whatever reason, deionized water just makes me feel like its purer than any reverse osmosis removing impurities from tap water could ever be.

So as unreliable as the Ca checker. That's too bad.

This CA checker works for me, it measures a little high, probably from my rodi but the numbers are very consistent. Can’t say the same about this mag checker tho. It’s as if this checker didnt go through enough testing, before moving to production.

RoDI water is deionized. Ro filters remove the solids and the DI removes the oxygen and salt/ions

Straight DI water only has charged ions removed not other contaminants.
It has probably been made either from RO filtered water or distilled water (or both)

I've worked in 2 labs. The first used deionised because it's cheaper and it wasn't that important how pure it was. The second lab tried deionised when a new test procedure was released and it wasn't pure enough, so we used distilled in the long run. In my experience, deionised has only been the standard in labs when cost outways the importance of purity.

The Magnesium Checker has a nearly 50% rate of being returned as faulty - seems Hanna messed up on this one.

I would say more like 90%. Only heard a couple that said theirs are ok

The one person I know of that has a positive YouTube video review on it-“clent coral reef” said his is accurate. However, I asked him to run some serial tests to see his results and he does seem to get consistent results (1635,1635,1645) however, they are very high like what I’m hearing from all the other complaints.

He stated it’s because he removed some corals and hasn’t adjusted his magnesium dosing since, however, I’m skeptical. People that get readings below even say 1500 seem to be non-existent and I don’t know of many people that intentionally target a mag level >1500.

I wish Hanna would reply and state they are at least looking into these complaints. Hopefully everyone with issues is contacting them.

The tips don't seat well on the syringes. I used a small flat head screwdriver to push the inner short tube into the tip a bit further and that allowed the syringe to fit much tighter. After doing this, I got two readings of 1460 and 1440 which, based on my last Triton test seem accurate.

Interesting. Although I’ve tried completely not using the tips and going by mL volume using luer lock syringes and plastic iv catheter tips which screw on and make a water/air tight connection and still get crazy readings.

I’m still sending mine back to Hanna, but I’m glad you got yours working.

Honestly, I haven't used it enough to be sure its working. I'm going to buy a new Salifert test to check it against.

Remember when @Bulk Reef Supply would test the test kits? It sure would be nice if they still offered content like that. I know this is a "new" test but that should be all the more reason to showcase it and put it through its paces and see how it stacks up against the rest.

Same here. I just ordered another salifert mag kit while waiting got my to get back. Heard it’s a 4 weeks wait time.

I also requested if they can provide extra reagents when the replacements being shipped back since I used around 15 tests since it was so inconsistent. Will keep this community posted.

Just as an FYI, there are no tests that reefkeepers do where properly deionized water is not perfectly suitable.

The problem is that many reefer hobby DI units are not producing fully deionized water, and almost no reefers have the tools to know if they are or not.

Do me a favor and redo a test. This time do not use the tip on Reagent A. When Reagent A draws air, you get less of Reagent A in the test pushing the numbers high. Try running a test without this tip, or try running a test using 5 ml of Reagent A. Please let me know how this works for you.
