I've never bought anything off of this site and I'm in the process of making a deal. Not passing judgment here but how do you figure out the legitimacy of a seller? I have no idea what these points or ratings mean. Is there a certain payment method that is preferred? Thank you all for any input. First time buyer here

Yes, very sketchy. When purchasing always send via the “goods and services” option. That way you get buyer protection with your purchase.
