I have been working with @Printed Reef to create a new design for the Kessil A360X.

This began because of the light spill I'm experiencing over my tank (anyone else?). The Kessil has a 135dg native spread and that goes well beyond the 24x24 footprint when mounted at 8" such that anyone seated in the same room as the tank gets blinded. My system is a WB 170.4/5... 54"x26"... so similar to a fatboy 120g (48x24) but the Waterbox stands are somewhat tall resulting in the bottom of the fixture at 67" off the floor -- that's above eye height for most people!

I debated on how to solve this as there aren't many ready made solutions beyond a canopy and that isn't the look I want. A few people have rigged some lamp shades or other DIY solutions. I looked hard at 55dg adapters from Kessil, but I didn't want to cut the spread down that much (foreshadowing!) Ultimately I discovered Printed Reef and their recently released shade for the A360X: I decided to order a set of them in the cone version:

Oooh fancy! They mount with a magnetic adapter and fit tightly to the fixture. I calculated that I didn't need the shade to be as tall to be effective, so I had my set made a custom height of 1.75" vs the standard 2.5"

They came quickly and I was pretty excited. So I installed one and unfortunately the shade was too successful at reducing spread; it went from roughtly 40” coverage to 16” at 7” below the light, meaning that the tank received significantly less light and shadowing was extreme. In hindsight it makes perfect sense because they have a narrow form, which would be perfect if I had a nano or wanted to mount the light much higher, but it wasn't going to work for my install.

No Shade, notice all the light outside the tank, up on walls, etc.

With Printed Reef Cone Shade:

So with some back and forth, some napkin math and some cardboard cut-outs, we came up with this:

Pro-grade, right? Cereal boxes and packing tape to the rescue. It is a wide enough angle (about 90dg spread) so that the light is now hitting the entire top of the tank, but keeping it from spraying light all over the room. Most importantly, when seated my eye doesn't see the lense.

With somewhat flimsy cardboard Wide-angle Shade... the back left corner is a little over shaded because the cardboard is warping:

Printed Reef went to work and have skillfully produced a new wide-angle shade!

Reportedly they are tricky to print because of the shape and take significant time on the printer, but things are in motion. I'm anxiously awaiting the final product to test out. Will be posting again when I get my hands on them, but wanted to give the heads up to anyone looking for a solution. Feel free to pitch ideas too!

Kessil makes a 35 degree reflector (not a shade) that eliminates light over spill while maintaining intensity. I’m running one on my tank and I love it.

Interesting! The 35 is even narrower than the 55 that is often recommended -- too little coverage for my application, even with 4x fixures it would shade heavily.

What footprint tank are you using it on and at what height?

WB 25 peninsula. My couch and lazyboy are on the opposite wall in my living room and there is no annoying blue light straight into my eyes. Previously, I had a gen 5 and gen 6 xr15 that would tan my feet while on the couch. This is 1000% better.

There is a little shading, but it provides nice contrast and places to tuck in low light demand corals. See the discos along the back.

Lenses are great, but the currently available options, 35 & 55, reduce the spread substantially (duh). Very helpful for deep tanks, small footprints, or higher mount heights... even hybrid set ups where shadowing is handled by different fixtures. For those of us trying to keep the increased spread and overlapping coverage from multiple single-point fixtures it works against that. The shades, in contrast, will only restrict the light that wouldn't otherwise go into the tank and keeps it out of our eyeballs!

If Kessil wants to make a 90 to 120 degree reflector, I'm down to try it. Meanwhile... I'm going to continue working with this shade design.

I’ll telling you man, you really should try the 50 and 35 first. Check out the 20:35 mark of the video below. He’s running 3 X 35 degree on a six foot tank.

Wow these are perfect and sorely needed. 90degress vs the native 120+ is really something they should offer factory.

So… lots to update on.

I received the first version of the shade.

It’s the dimensions of my template and provides excellent spill protection while maintaining spread. The functionality is so much higher for the 24x24 area that is commonly desired. I'm measuring about a 16" radius over the water at 8" from lense. That allows the light to almost hit the corners of a 24" square, and in my installation has an acceptable amount of spill.

I ran the shade for awhile and reported back to @Printed Reef with some observations. One of which was the durability of the shade.

I knocked the shade off the fixture while reaching to adjust a cord and it landed on the screen top. I don't know whether it was the impact of my hand (more of a grazing) or the landing, but the shade cracked near the outer lip.

The print was done at 2mm wall in an attempt to keep the print time down. However, it was somewhat fragile and so when v2.0 arrived I was pleased to see the thickness of the shade was upped and now has a solid almost hefty feel to it. V2.0 is on the left:

This newest version also sports a redesigned mount collar that has tabs to hold the magnets in place. As a result the shade as a whole sits tighter to the fixture face and eliminates the light leaking out between the two.

Performance wise I have been running them for weeks now and have not seen any reduction in light or increased shadowing. The spill into the room has been reduced dramatically, and what little I have is to the side because I have the outer fixtures only 9.5 inches from the edge. If they were mounted 12” in there would be no spill.
