So I am close to completing the purchase of my new upgrade tank but as I have never had a sump before looking for advice.
There is a photo on here of an example of my new sump but not 100% how I set it out as I've only ever had an external filter.
I am wanting my protein skimmer and bio reactor in there too. I currently run seachem phosguard, purgien, carbon, matrix. Guessing I keep these in there but on a large scale?
I am also planning to place live rock as I am going for an artifical reef but as I currently have some live rock guessing this is good to add to my filter?
And last question do you place a heater in the sump? Or can you place the tanks heater in and this will keep the tank warm?

Think that's everything ;)

It's common for people to put their heaters in the sump for astetic purposes. You should not need a heater in the display tank as well.

If space becomes a concern, you might consider using ceramic bio media instead of live rock. Also, Bulk Reef Supply sells media reactors you can hang above your sump.

I hope this helps!

Correct heater goes in the sump. One of tbe great things a out having a sump setup is to keep as much equipmeant as you can out of the tank. So you have that nice clean look. Think your on the right track.

Is there another wall in the sump that we can't see due to the center brace on the stand? Or is it one big section? If so that would make a fine refugium. Plenty of room for live rock, a reactor & some macro algae. The return section (far right) is plenty big for a return pump & skimmer too ! How big is Your tank? Nice sump & Welcome to R2R !
As to your question, Yes it's fine to put your heater in there . We will be happy to help Ya out with advice .

To answer your question you can place the heater either in your sump or display. You don’t need to do both. Most people prefer to put it in the sump so you do t have to see it when looking into your tank.
