For the past couple weeks, I’ve been completely independent of using dried nori(sushi seaweed) and feed the tangs on macros that are grown in the fuge. I’ve also stopped using GFO completely. After 2 weeks of testing PO4 daily with and without GFO, I didn’t feel the need to use it. PO4 is sitting between 0.07 to 0.1ppm.

I have 6 varieties of macro in the fuge and rotate between them on harvesting and feeding to the tangs

This weeks harvest. Half a gallon container full last about a week. And I do feed them heavily.

Did it take any time for them to learn to go after it or did they go right to it?

They went after everything pretty quickly especially the Ogo. However, the sea lettuce took them a very long time to eat it. I almost give up. In fact, I threw away a lot of sea lettuce in the beginning because they wont eat it. It took awhile but one day, the foxface decided to nibble on it and then the rest of the tang joined it. The foxface is by far the most ferocious algae eater. The problem with it eating the sea lettuce is that it doesn't fully digest it. It poops out the leafy bits which then is eaten again by it or other fish. ;Vomit

that's pretty disgusting! lol

Good to know, thanks. I have cheato growing as well as some ogo. I assume they wouldn't eat the cheato but my intent is to give nori with the occasional ogo as a treat whenever it's enough to harvest. May want to follow your lead, however, and put in a few others.

Tank is looking awesome! I like the idea of feeding the algae to the fish as you harvest it. Free , renewable food source

I'll update on how long it can be sustained. I don't have not big of a fuge. I'm playing with the idea of hooking up another tank to it and grow more macros. I just don't want to heat up more water right now. It gets cold in my basement(50f) and the heaters are always on in the Winter.

Yeah, my 3 heaters are on a lot as well , I have a 24x20x20 Fuge (first chamber of my sump) , crushed coral, and rock in there now with some grape caulerpa. Thinking I should add some more for some variety.

I don't have any regrets for the work I've done in the fuge. I never had any success with Chaeto. So in this build, I did not put in any Chaeto. I'm not sure if I've put more thought into the refugium that I can grow all those macros in this build or it's just Chaeto that I can't grow in previous build.
My fuge chamber in the sump is not huge. I think it's 10"x20"x18". But I do have the Blue Hypnea in the anemone tank. It was an experiment to see how fast it spreads and how easy it is to remove. I was thinking of putting it in the display tank since I thought it looks cool. I had a small piece on a small rock near the back glass box in the anemone tank and within 2 months, not only it went onto the glass and covered a nice 8x8area, it overtook a large piece of rock adjacent to it. So I decided not to put in display. However, I highly doubt any macros would last in the display tank with all the tangs eating the macros I feed them now.
My goal with the fuge is to have it do enough to keep my nutrients so that I don't have to use GFO. It's a PITA to replace GFO for me. So far, I think I've found the equilibrium of the nutrient level without running GFO and I'm okay with the level. We'll see how it goes for the next several months.

I do the same, feed harvested macro algae to main tank and yeah my foxface poop does get eaten by the Tomini too.. way too funny that ur tank inhabitants do likewise! Any reason why u stopped feeding nori?

Good thinking on the macros. I have some sea lettuce that randomly grows on egg crate in my frag tank and the tangs are always working it over, but I feel like it would take over if left unchecked. Do you see it growing anywhere in your display? Also I didn’t think about po4 coming from nori.

Doug,
I don't see any algae in the display with the 11 tangs and 1 Foxface. The Foxface is a big eater but it has accustomed to just wait for the clip to drop. The two Whitetail Bristletooth Tangs are very active on the rocks.
I actually have been very messy with the live macro drop. At first, my thought was that I better not contaminate the tank with live macro and have an out-of-control macros growing on the rocks. But it's very difficult to not be messy with the blue hypnea. They tend to break apart easily. After seeing the macros just float everywhere and still haven't seen anything growing in the display tank, I have no worries at all.

I'm at the end of this container harvest of Blue Hypnea and it has been two weeks. And I'm seeing an overflow of Sea Lettuce growing that need to be harvested.

I'm waiting for the Red Ogo to branch out a bit more. This is their favorite and I was down to one small branch. Looks like it's coming back pretty nicely.

I don’t have much exciting stuff going on in the tank. Waiting for frags to grow out. Waterchange is being done by Continuous Masterflex of 3G a day. I don’t run GFO or carbon so I don’t even have that to change.
I only have the macros to tend every week or two.

Looks like Sea lettuce is on the menu this week.

Where did you get magnetic algae holder with the pivot arm? Specifically because it works nice on the eurobrace.
