That’s a good idea! The room my tank is in is far from the bathroom, so I’ll probably have to pump it out too. I really like the idea of an automatic water changer. It’ll save alot of time. Do you ever need to vacuum your sand?

Yeah! I got a cheap little pump and cheap silicone hose. It’s not the fastest pump but as long as I’m not lugging buckets around I don’t care!.

Yeah I still did that as part of my weekly maintenance.

I think vacuuming the sand is debated. I vacuumed mine because I didn’t have a super thick sand bed and I hated all the stuff that built up in it.

If you haven’t been vacuuming it I would not just go and vacuum all of it now. I vacuumed my sand from the very beginning.

Since I use a filter roll. I bought some cheap filter sick of Amazon and plastic clamps. Just clamped the sock to the side of the sump and vacuum the sand while the tank is running :)

Added sand, filled the tank with water and got my chiller/heater all calibrated (I use an in tank thermometer as the primary calibration tool. I calibrate my apex probe and chiller probe to what the thermometer in the tank reads. If anyone is curious). Also I had to use some plumbers tape on the treads from the bulkhead to the drain. I like the tank overall but the connection from the bulkhead to the drain is really gritty and ended up leaking. When the tank clears up I’ll post a few more pics.

Will start cycling the tank soon (fishless cycle)

Looking good. I’d add some silicate removing media to any new tank with dry rock to minimise any leeching of silicates or phosphates. I prefer a aluminium based phosphate removing media like phosban but there’s other options. GFO will remove silicates too.

Saltcreep will help seal that bulkhead.

I got my auto water change system set up, added a few fish, some astrea snails for the rock and conches to help clean the sand! The tank is looking super ugly lol.

I am going to help my conches out by vacuuming the sand. I hope I can share a less ugly tank next time 😂.

I also added a gate valve instead of using the ball valve that came with the tank. I could not get the water level right. The tank was so noisy slurping. I haven’t had an issue since installing the gate valve.

Tank update!

My clean up crew is killing it! Added a few turbo snails to help clean the rocks clean. Might add some nassarius and brittle stars. Hoping they will turn over the sand bed more and keep it nice and clean. No more gobies for me! Spitting sand all over my prize acanthus and sand bed corals in the past!

I got my dosing containers all set up. Seeing I feed aggressively my mechanical filtration and 20 percent water change per weeks has a hard time keeping up so I dose lanthium (phosphate e) for po4 and nopox for nitrate. I prefer lanthium because it just works better and is just easier to deal with than gfo.

Next couple of weeks I’ll dial in my nutrients and maybe you guys will see a sexy maxima clam next update :).

Any advice is appreciated good or bad all is welcome! If anyone has different methods to do some stuff please let me know!

Ps doing a late night water change 😉

Nice things are coming along I see , what are your nutrients looking like , I’m personally not a fan of adding anything especially to a young tank. Key thing is stability once you get a baseline adjust from there but yes lanthium is a lot easier to control dosing.

Haven’t checked yet. Waiting for some all reagent to touch down

Yea hands down I would wait a test before dosing anything based on no algae on the rocks I’m almost certain your nutrient are a lot lower than you think , also one key thing is that usally during the first year you dry rock will soak a lot of po4 up , iv had instances where I had to add nutrients but definitely keep us updated with those numbers

Yeah, I had Dino in the last tank, pumped the system with both po4 and no3 just to have to lower it forever 😂. These things make no sense haha

Quick update

Tested the water. Parameters are:

Storage water
Alk- 7.2 (Hannah)
Mag- 1290 (Salifert)
Cal- I don’t check it
Salinity- 1.023-1.024

Tank
Alk- 7.7 (Hannah)
Mag- 1410 (salifert)
Cal- I don’t check it
No3- 0
Po4- 0
Salinity 1.023

I am not going to buff my storage water or my tank with alk or mag. I prefer to run my tank at 7.5 alk and 1300-1400 mag.

How I plan to raise my po4, no3 and salinity.

I dose green leaf aquarium potassium nitrate and potassium phosphate. I use this website to calculate dose.

https://web.archive.org/web/20160313090515/http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/calculator.htm

I’ve never had an issue with it raising other things in my tank. It’s just cheaper than using brightwell and you can make it as strong or weak as you’d like.

For my low salinity, I will raise the salinity of the autowater change water to bring it up salinity in the tank. We will see if this fixes the issue. If it doesn’t the dos might be pulling out too much water and not adding enough back in. But seeing they are relatively close to each other makes me believe it’s working fine I just didn’t add enough salt.

I can probably turn my water change system off, skimmer off and feed more but I prefer to get my tank dialed with how I plan to run it.

Any questions feel free to ask.

I like your setup. I’m planning on getting a Nyos Opus G2 200 43 gallon. I’m curious how you got your fleece roller to fit into the sump. I’m getting very little information from researching.
