Hi! :)

I may need some help. I have a pair of Ocellaris Clowns that's been with me since october 2017. I originally had them in a 130g but I downgraded to a nuvo fusion 20g not long ago. The 130g simply was too big!
When I had them in the 130g they both always seemed fine, they did their dance and was eating well. Other than the male occasionally would stop eating for a few days before eating again from time to time, they seemed to be fine and happy. The female was always hungry and never lost interest in food, until 5 days ago. She all of a sudden lost interest. I've tried pellets, mysis and brine, and nothing seems to interest her, and it looks like she is breathing more rapidly than she used to. The male is eating and seems fine.

A little info about the nuvo tank: I sat it up 10 months ago, cycled it with Red Sea Reef Mature Kit. After cycle I put a few nassaruis snails in there and began feeding them a little once a week to keep things going. I used CaribSea live sand and CaribSea Life Rock. I added a few Trochus snails after a while as well, but they died not too long after I added them, which may have been because of lack of algae, but I don't know. The nassarius have been fine and are still very much alive, and they were also originally in the 130g.

On march 20th, a long time after I started the nuvo fusion, I moved over my Ocellaris Clows (they are my only fish and I orignally wanted to add an anemone for them before i moved them over, but decided not to, hence the long time before adding them), and a couple weeks later I moved over the rest of my stock, a cleaner shrimp pair and a Tuxedo Urchin. The first couple days the clowns werent too hungry, but they did eat. After the first few days they started eating normally again, and have been since, until like I said 5 days ago when the female stopped eating. I first thought maybe she also sometimes can stop eating for a couple days like the male does on occasion, but she never has, and now with 5 days I am worried something is wrong with her.

The tank was up for such a long time with no fish that I dont know what can cause this.
One thing I should add though, I have a seneye monitoring the tank, and the ammonia did climb from 0.001 to 0.010 a week or so ago and havent gone down yet. However since the seneye only starts alerting at 0.020 and still shows things as "ok", i didn't think this was a reason. Is o.o10ppm a reason for concern? I do 20% montly water changes. Another thing is I think I have seen white stringy poop from them both a few times, but it's been hard to tell.

I really dont know what to do at this point, is it normal for clowns to lose interest in food on occasion? Can something be wrong with her, and what should I do now?

I have some medications on hand that I bought before I bought the fish, that I found when reading this forum. The meds I have are PraziPro, KanaPlex, MetroPlex, Cupramine, Methylene Blue and Furan-2.

I have added a video of her, and Im sorry for the bad quality, I didnt think enough to flip the phone as I wanted to film her before she moved to the back of the aquarium where she and the male are using the wall for a host :)

All help will be greatly appreciated!

A couple things
1) any detectable amount of ammonia isn’t good and can affect fish in negative ways.
2) white stringy poop is a symptom of internal parasites. Typical treatment is metroplex+Focus+food fed for 14 days and you can add a drop of garlic guard to mask the taste and entice feeding.
3) I would also recommend doing a WC to lower any detectable amounts of ammonia.

I would try to get them eating the metro laced food for 14 days and observe. It is reef safe as long as you feed what can be eaten. You can also run carbon to remove any that makes its way into the water column.
I think I would also add a seachem ammonia badge as a back up to watch ammonia levels (just in case).

Thanks for the reply! I am doing a water change tonight, and I have ordered some garlic guard, although it wont arrive until monday. Should I begin trying metroplex with food before then or should I wait til I get the garlic guard, considering she is not interested in food at the moment?
And if they dont eat the food that contains the metroplex, will it be bad for the snails and shrimps if they eat it? The shrimps are really quick to grab all the food they can get.
Any tips on what I can do if she still refuses to eat?

Do you have a QT tank you can setup? I’m hoping the ammonia is the root cause of this and after a WC she starts eating again. If she doesn’t start eating you will need to QT them so you can dose Metro or GC to the water column (not reef/invert safe) in hopes that ingesting the meds through the water it will suppress the internal parasites and enough to get her eating.

As for the inverts you really only feed a very small amount that could be eaten and not blown all over the tank

I can set up a quarantine tank yes. I hope the WC will work too, but I have all I need to set up a quarantine tank if I need to. If it comes to that, what should I do when dosing the MetroPlex to the water column? How often should I do waterchanges, and is there anything I should keep an eye on? I haven't medicated my fish before, so I don't want to mess it up if I need to quarantine and medicate :)

She eats again! Did the waterchange to drop the ammonia, it got down to 0.007, and fed a brine+mysis mix today, and she ate! Her breathing seems to be back to normal as well :)
Thanks for your help :)
I really didn't think such small traces of ammonia would make such a difference, and I find it wierd that the seneye monitor lists it as safe up til 0.020, but i'll keep an extra eye on it from now on, and do another waterchange to drop it all the way down.

If she continues to eat and accepts pellets again do you recommend I treat them with metro still?

Yes, white stringy poop is internal parasites and will eventually make her stop eating again. You should treat for it. Feed metro+Focus laced food for 14 days to all fish in that tank.

Okay, I'll start treating them. I'm getting the garlic guard on monday, and I'll do another large waterchange today to hopefully get the ammonia all the way down, and then treat them with metro. I only have the clown pair in the tank.

Thanks again! :)
