optics question

My light that I built had 90 degree optics on it and is is spotlighting. The light is about 3" from the water. My question is can I take the optics off so I can get more coverage in the tank but still get good penetration in the tank. I have a 18" deep tank and 60 3w Cree leds

Depending on the optic you will loose a lot of penetration.

Your better option is to raise the fixture.

Also about how far above the tank should they be???

In the link they were 2" above the water and you could see the spread.

Generally 12-18" is were most hang their fixture but that all depends on the optic and tank width.
