Allow myself to introduce, myself..... I've been out of reefing for several years after moving houses. I had sold off my old BioCube 29 setup for LPS and SPS and hadn't gotten back into things until my 3 year old daughter took an interest in fish recently.
That said, her interest has resparked my passion for the hobby. So for the past few weeks, I've been digging in and am excited to see there have been some really great changes in the past 7 or 8 years. I've always been a techie guy and on the bleeding side of things (such as putting CREE LEDs in my BioCube when they first came out), so seeing lots of new innovations when it comes to lighting, monitoring, etc is going to be super fun. I'm open to input from the community on my build.
I digress....
To start off my build, I didn't want to be limited to an all-in-one setup like a JBJ or BioCube, and really love the look of a rimless tank. Aside from Deep Blue/Seapora, there aren't a ton of great options that are affordable; at least not until I stumbled across some pretty neat tanks made by SR Aquaristik (SRA). SRA is pretty well known for their equipment like skimmers and these tanks are new in their product line. There isn't a whole lot of info/reviews of these tanks, but as I mentioned, I like trying new and innovative products, which their tanks seem to be of really high quality. I did have a chance to talk to their owner to get more info on the tanks, and he instilled a lot of confidence in the products they make. As of writing this, they just posted their new sumps on their site, which look pretty amazing as well. This is going to be a slow build, but I'll post progress as it occurs.
Here's the tank unpacked, these pictures really don't do it justice.
Love the black sealant and super clean edges.
Tank is 100cm x 35cm x 35cm.
Let's take that tag off and show off the logo. Oh, which is laser etched INSIDE the glass!
Here's the plan I came up with. Some might say that the stand needs vertical supports from ground to tank, but I honestly don't think it's needed. This will allow me to create a flat 1/2" deck inside the cabinet without having to create cut outs on the edges for vertical supports. the outer panels are 1/4" oak and I'll be adding oak trim/casing. For the door I plan on cutting out one large panel and mounting with magnets. I can post the actual Sketchup files if someone is interested.
Here's the stand as it sits right now. The first coat of white marine paint is actually drying. I have to say, the pocket hole jig i picked up is easily my new favorite tool.
